How to wear a trophy jacket

The trailblazing founder of Bleach London salons, ALEX BROWNSELL, relies on bright, offbeat style to represent her alt-beauty brand – and a bold jacket is her go-to for subversive power dressing. These are her tips for getting it right

Fashion

Dress it down

“A statement jacket over a pair of jeans and a T-shirt is the perfect day look when you have a busy schedule. For me, a great jacket and heels are the ultimate power duo to boost confidence for an important meeting.”

Borrow from the boys

“I like wearing men’s jackets, so I’ll roll up the sleeves if they are oversized or boxy, and wear them loose and open to show off what I’m wearing beneath.”

Shoulder on

“I’ve always looked to the ’80s for style inspiration, so I really love the return of the power shoulder on the catwalks. A tuxedo jacket with big shoulders adds real impact to an evening look.”

Make a match

“Try wearing a statement jacket with matching pants. I’ve got a red and orange silk pajama suit by Gucci that I love wearing as a co-ord. This is just as effective with more tailored pieces, too.”

Have fun

“Style is about being comfortable in yourself and in your clothes, but also taking charge of your outfit. I love color, but I wouldn’t wear something that didn’t feel authentically ‘me’. Don’t be afraid to experiment outside of your comfort zone, but only invest in jackets that complement your style and make you feel confident.”

Dress it up

“If you have a night out planned and you’re in a rush, a trophy jacket is like an instant outfit. You don’t even need accessories if it’s something quite embellished. I just tie back my hair, leave my makeup pared back and style it with a bag in a bold color.”
