Sartorially speaking, your natural inclination might be to save extravagant pieces (read: riotous prints, exaggerated proportions or anything sequined, sparkly, feathered or beaded) for so-called ‘special’ occasions. However, the transformative powers of a scene-stealing dress or ‘out out’ top can prove even more potent during the day. What’s the secret to making it work? Some of our favorite designers share their secrets…

ATTICO by Gilda Ambrosio and Giorgia Tordini

“We love using our creativity to push boundaries and create pieces that make women feel beautiful and powerful at the same time. Sequins are generally synonymous with after-dark looks but we aren’t interested in perpetuating clichés; we believe that women should be free to have fun with fashion. Why not wear sequins during the daytime with classic blue denim or a crisp white shirt? Why wait for a special occasion? We love experimenting with unexpected combinations, like wearing a feathered crop top under a sharp suit. However, the real secret to great style is being comfortable in what you wear, so for a natural minimalist, an eye-catching accessory might be enough.”

16ARLINGTON by Marco Capaldo and Federica Cavenati

“Clothes give you such freedom to express yourself; we love the feeling of confidence that statement pieces can bring. ‘Maximal’ clothing can take many shapes and forms – from beautiful cuts and volume to a great sleeve on a tailored jacket or elegant drapery, they’re head-turning but very wearable at the same time. The key when wearing a print is to let it take center stage. Our Dalmatian-print leather pants paired with a chunky oversized knit or a black T-shirt makes for an effortless off-duty look. It’s the same with sequins and feathers – they can be dressed up or down to work for any occasions; wear them with denim or tailoring to give your daytime look an extra touch of glam.”

ROTATE BIRGER CHRISTENSEN by Jeanette Friis Madsen and Thora Valdimars

“When ‘power dressing’ arrived in the 1980s, it really changed the game for women – it was all about confidence and an almost masculine energy, even though the aesthetic was super feminine and sexy. We feel the same kind of power when we wear our puff-sleeved dress with chunky boots during the day, or our layer our wrap dresses over a pair of pants. Scandinavian style is usually quite minimal, but we wanted to add more fun, sexy and extravagant pieces into our wardrobes. If you’re not a natural extrovert but want to have more fun with your look, the easiest place to start is to start with sculptural black pieces. They can add exciting shape and edge to a laid-back look.”
