Cindy Crawford’s Facialist Shares His Favorite Treatment For Great Skin
As Hollywood’s go-to facialist for red-carpet prep, and the man behind the legendary supermodel’s ageless glow, IVÁN POL uses the power of radio frequency to transform skin. Here, he tells MALENA HARBERS why it really works – and how you can recreate the results at home
The benefits of radio frequency
As the gold-standard non-invasive clinical treatment for firming skin, radio frequency (RF) uses controlled heat damage to activate skin repair by creating new collagen. Harnessing this technology – and its incredible skin results – Iván Pol’s non-toxic, pain-free and surprisingly gentle facials use a bespoke mix of three different types of RF (monopolar, bipolar and infrared) to sculpt, lift and define facial contours for both instant and cumulative benefits. “Since I’m treating at different depths in the dermis, results are more long-lasting, too,” says Pol. If Cindy Crawford’s plumped-up, glowing complexion is anything to go by, it’s well worth booking in to his Los Angeles clinic. Alternatively, while nothing beats the real thing, here’s how you can attempt to emulate Pol’s coveted results at home…
Cleanse with micellar water
“If you wear a lot of makeup during the day, then you can choose to double cleanse. However, if you don’t wear a lot of makeup and you have a dry skin type, there’s no need to do so,” says Pol. “I’m really into using a micellar water for cleansing because it lifts impurities and pollutants but doesn't strip the skin. I love Furtuna Skin’s Acqua Serena Micellar Essence – it balances your skin’s pH and gets rid of any excess oil, too.”
Apply omega oils topically
“In order to have glowing skin, you need to feed your skin essential fatty acids,” says Pol. “Many of us take supplements and vitamins, but the last place for those actives to have residual effects is the skin,” says Pol. “My [The Beauty Sandwich] SS01 Secret Sauce formula is full of all the fundamentals your skin needs – such as essential fatty acids (omega 3, 6, 9 and 7), ceramides and phytocholesterols – in the perfect ratio, to mimic the action of the skin and to act as a needle-free, replenishing facial filler. I always use this in combination with radio frequency on my clients; it’s my red-carpet secret weapon to seal in a glow that lasts.”
Use what feels right for you
“I take more of a minimal approach to skincare, but there are some people who like to layer on products. Whichever approach makes you feel good is key here. When you choose your clothing for the day, sometimes you want to wear satin, some days you want to wear silk, or cashmere. Think of your skincare in a similar way. There will be days that you’re going to want to layer more serums or creams. Just keep it natural, keep it clean and keep it non-toxic.” When it comes to which products to choose, Pol advises looking for moisturizer formulas with ceramides, first and foremost, to help with barrier repair.
Exfoliate with lactic acid only
“I do not recommend doing harsh exfoliation or using retinol,” says Pol. “One of my favorite natural exfoliators is organic yogurt. It’s rich in lactic acid and fatty acids, which keep your skin glowing and plump. You can apply a thin layer of yogurt to clean skin and use it as a cleanser or a mask for the best benefits.”
Add laser to your routine
“The most effective at-home tool that I use is the Lyma Laser. I use it in an upward motion, starting from the corners of the mouth, to mimic the action of my in-clinic Beauty Sandwich [radio-frequency] technique. This is what creates my signature red-carpet, ‘snatched’ glow.”
