Vintage furnishings and bespoke hand-painted elements combine to create intrigue in this uplifting and artful space

The dreamy beach house in Massachusetts – Frances Merrill, Reath Design

“This is our client’s summer house in Cape Ann, Massachusetts. Because it is a summer beach house, it was designed to be full of guests. Our client is a fantastic hostess, but we wanted a place for her to escape to, so we combined the two front bedrooms into one large space with a bed, bath and shower – all with incredible views of the ocean.

“The four-poster bed from Dalila Formentini has an amazing, artful presence, but it is light enough not to block the view. And the exquisite vintage Italian painted blanket trunk is the perfect vintage counterpoint to the colorful custom hand-painted armoire.” Reath Design

Layering contemporary style with traditional and antique pieces evoke a feeling of calm and relaxation in this London bedroom

The pared-back historic house in London – Alex Dauley, Dauley Design

“The property is a four-bedroom Edwardian house in south London, purchased by my client in 2019. We completely renovated and extended the house, designing and decorating in a contemporary style with layered traditional and antique elements and furnishings.

“This bedroom was an exercise in restraint. The client wanted a space that evoked a feeling of calm and relaxation. It is minimal, but layered and warm with natural materials featured throughout. I love this room because of the way it makes you feel when you step into it. It is an oasis of calm. Pared-back luxury was the brief: uncluttered, airy and light. A space in which to unwind and relax.

“I absolutely love the arched doorway through to the dressing room, which is situated in the new extension. It wasn’t originally meant to be an arch, but I quickly realized it really had to be. The walls are limewashed and give such depth and softness to the space. Antique pieces, such as the bench and accessories, all ground the space with their rich patina, strong narrative and storytelling presence.” Dauley Design

Soothing textures, neutral colors and eye-catching pieces work in harmony in this contemporary New York room

The iconic apartment in New York City – Nicole Hollis

“This is a client’s apartment in New York City, in the iconic, historic Walker Tower building in Chelsea. Our goal was to create a modern bedroom that feels both collected and relaxed. This room features upholstered walls with accents of striking photography and collectable yet comfortable furnishings.

“We wanted to keep the colors neutral and textural by pairing a subtle patterned rug with a stunning bronze coffee table by Rogan Gregory (discovered in his studio in Los Angeles), a wood bench by Raphael Navot via Les Ateliers Courbet, and art by Marilyn Minter.” Nicole Hollis
