Beauty

IN THE MORNING

I wake up at 5.30am and head to the gym…

…I started taking my fitness more seriously at 40 and I like to push myself, so I do a combination of interval training, weights, and I run up to 10km twice a week, too.

I haven’t eaten dairy for 15 years

I used to eat up to five yogurts a day, but I’ve always had problems with a painful gut – when I cut out dairy, the bloating and pain instantly went away. I now stick to almond or goats’ yogurt, and supplement with probiotics.

Supplements weren’t popular when I first started taking them…

…but I truly believe beauty comes from the inside. As I am always busy and used to travel so frequently, I find supplements are a great way to boost my diet. Daily, I take [supplementary] collagen, iron, magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin D, probiotics, hyaluronic acids and biotin.

Post-shower, I like to sandwich my skincare…

…I start with a toner, move onto a serum, and the butter in my sandwich is my Mimi Luzon Hyaluronic Pro Gel. I follow with a day cream and sun cream – always SPF30.

I like to keep the pH of my skin more acidic…

…this is when I see a real difference in the texture. I never use soap on my body. Instead, I use body oils like Clarins Tonic Treatment Toning Body Oil, which tends to be more acidic and really gives my skin the best glow. I dry body brush up to three times a week – sometimes before the gym if I have time – and I’m obsessed with body treatments, particularly IPL and radio frequency; I book a course of six before summer, then maintain once a month – it really does make all the difference.

If my skincare is the lingerie for my face, my makeup is the outfit

I can do my makeup in one-minute flat – I’m quicker at getting ready than my husband. I use Tom Ford Beauty Traceless Soft Matte Foundation, which is super-light and excellent for older skin, then I use Guerlain Terracotta Light The Sun-kissed Healthy Glow Powder, a pop of blush, mascara, and a Dior lip balm.

IN THE EVENING

I always do a peel on a ‘bad face’ day…

…usually a lactic or glycolic acid one. Peels renew my skin and, for me, the texture of my skin is far more important than wrinkles. I’ve always suffered from pigmentation, which started post-pregnancy after having my daughter 23 years ago, so I maintain clear skin by doing a deep peel on myself in the salon, which comes with a downtime of three days. I do it on a Friday and, come Monday morning, my skin looks amazing.

I prefer to eat raw food

Five years ago I started eating more raw food and it made me feel so much better, cleaner and lighter, and I don’t feel as tired. I fast four times a year for 24 hours at a time. This isn’t to lose weight, but to give me more energy – it literally reboots my system.

I won’t wear foundation to an event…

…because of the camera flash – it can be very unflattering. If I have time, I’ll do some effleurage massage movements with an oil, starting from the outside of my face and moving down to the heart for a few minutes to help stimulate blood circulation and encourage glow. I always follow with 15 layers of mascara – it sounds a lot, but the effect is amazing.

I never go to sleep with just a clean face

Every evening I set aside time to focus on my skin – it’s like a ceremony. For me, more is more, so I put everything on. Creams, masks, oils and serums are just my starting point – I follow with a radio-frequency device to help my products penetrate further into the skin.

I owe a lot of my success to Franca Sozzani, the former editor-in-chief of Italian Vogue

She was my biggest cheerleader – both of me and my products, and she remains one of my favorite people. I treated her for many years and throughout her illness, and I miss her greatly.

My secret to an amazing night’s sleep is…

…to have a lymphatic massage before going to bed – I’m obsessed! Whenever I travel I will always book one of my favorite therapists. In London I always see Flavia Morellato. I also swear by magnesium and, if I’m wired but tired, a cup of chamomile tea always helps soothe a frenetic mind.
