“I loved running around in the snow in Central Park and skating around the Wollman Rink,” said Ali MacGraw of shooting her iconic Love Story scene as Jenny Cavilleri, with co-star Ryan O’Neal. “I had recently moved to Los Angeles but I’m from New York, and I was just so happy to be back in the city in winter.”

Released in the Christmas of 1970, Love Story broke box-office records, earned MacGraw and O’Neal Oscar nominations for their performances as star-crossed lovers, and spawned a devotion that has endured for nearly 50 years. Today, you can still follow in MacGraw’s footsteps and skate around the Wollman Rink, or experience quintessential New York at some of the city’s hotspots: savor hot bagels from Three Guys on Madison Avenue, buy wreaths and garlands from the flower markets on 28th Street between 6th and 7th Avenue, then enjoy icy martinis and jazz at the Plaza. It’s one of New York’s most glamorous hotels and, right now, also its most festive, with a glittering Christmas tree in the iconic Palm Court and an attentive concierge who can source you tickets to the New York City Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker. In the hotel’s Todd English Food Hall, enjoy a reassuringly traditional turkey dinner served from the copper-domed trolley, followed by eggnog at the iconic Rose Club or milk and cookies with Father Christmas in Eloise’s Tea Room.
