5 Ways To Wear A Chain Necklace

The classic chain necklace is a jewelry-box staple, but how can you refresh your collection this season? Try these simple styling tips, says NET-A-PORTER’s market director LIBBY PAGE

Add contemporary edge to a neutral outfit with a statement chain – and hoops

Choose one ‘power dressing’ piece

“There is nothing that complements smart tailoring for SS24 quite like a modern statement chain – it’s guaranteed to amplify your look,” says Page. “If you’re opting for pale or neutral tailoring, then keep things contemporary with a chunky chain necklace in yellow or white gold – the bigger, the better.” A maxi chain is also an astute investment: choose an 18- or 14-karat-gold style, which will remain ultra-precious for generations to come, and style it with finer chains in similar lengths – or a pair of classic gold hoops.

Try a layered look

“Pendants, charms – in a mix of lengths and widths – can all come together for an eclectic take.” It is important to consider your curation, though: carefully spaced-out lengths will allow each piece to have its moment to shine. “This is also a great way to keep things personal; you can add chains that you’ve collected from your travels, or pieces with special meaning that are inherited,” suggests Page.

Pair with a bandeau

“When you’re wearing a corset or bandeau that shows off your décolletage and back, create maximum impact with short, layered chains,” says Page. A choker or collier-length chain is often the most flattering for off-the-shoulder outfits – it lights up your face and leaves shoulders bare. Try stacking chains with contrasting links, but stick to slender or medium thicknesses to avoid an overwhelming effect. And metal tones? “Silver gives a tougher feel and complements patent fabrics,” says Page. “Slicked-back hair will ensure your chains are the focal point, too.”

Try an ultra-long design

“T-shirts and tank tops are wardrobe fail-safes; a piece we can turn to whenever we’re stuck in a rut on those ‘what to wear’ mornings,” says Page. “A quick and easy way to elevate a tee or tank this season is to add a long chain necklace – those extra few seconds well spent will mean no one will be any the wiser of your rushed-off-your-feet morning.” If you opt for an ultra-long chain, you can also double-wrap it to suit different necklines, making it a versatile piece for every fine-jewelry collection.

Look to talisman designs in supersized proportions to make a statement this season

Add meaningful medallions

“There are few pieces of jewelry that are more sentimental or better for personal expression than a medallion,” says Page. “Whether they’re channeling strength, love, peace or energy, these potent talismans add so much interest and meaning to a simple chain,” she explains. “If you’re a romantic dresser, pair with a lace camisole, bralette or slip dress under knitwear for your everyday look – a chunky chain with a few medallions will be the perfect accent. This season we’re seeing plenty of supersized styles – hearts, coins and charms are souped up to create maximum impact.”
