Celebrity Hairstylist Harry Josh Reveals How To Get Next-Level Hair
He’s the hairdresser behind Gisele Bündchen’s signature waves and counts supermodels Helena Christensen, Cindy Crawford and Irina Shayk, plus Jodie Comer, Rose Byrne and Priyanka Chopra, among his roster of A-list clients – so it’s fair to say HARRY JOSH knows exactly how to create extraordinary hair. Here, he shares his red-carpet expertise (distilled into a few simple DIY hacks) with MALENA HARBERS
Style with purpose
“If you want to change your everyday updo into a head-turning evening bun, do it with intention,” says Josh. “Really slick your hair back, pull it tight and secure it onto the top of your head. Add a headband or earrings and lipstick to give it an extra pulled-together effect – hair accessories and minor changes in the way you style your hair make a very big impact.”
Consider your parting
“Add a parting to make your hairstyle more extreme,” says Josh. “Let’s say you’re going to a wedding or party and you’re normally a side-part person – by taking your parting over by an extra inch and making a deeper side part, you create drama. Let your hair fall over one eye and the drama will look even more intentional.”
The smallest details make the biggest difference
“The magic of red-carpet hair is in ensuring you have clean lines,” says Josh. “If your hair is tucked behind your ears, make sure it’s all tucked behind your ears; when it comes to flyaways, they should be all tacked down, and your style should be evenly hairsprayed if that’s the look. If you have a parting, be sure it’s geometrically sharp – these are the finishing details I do on the red carpet that ultimately take hair to the next level.”
Embrace your natural texture
“When you have textured hair and you want to do glamour, really lean into your volume. Women with curly or wavy hair often feel they need to tame their hair down for it to look glamorous, but, sometimes, brushing it out, making lots of volume, parting it deeply and tucking one side behind the ear gives you so much drama instead,” advises Josh. “Same goes for fine hair – lean into your texture. If volume is a struggle for you, opt for a shape that sits closer to the head and is more sleek.” Think a slick, low ponytail, or straight hair left long and glossy.
The one product you need
“A finishing spray is ideal for adding that final polished touch to most hairstyles and hair types. Always avoid pump hairsprays, as they come out too wet; you want to use an aerosol format instead. I love Kerasilk’s hairspray, as it has two different nozzles. Spin it in one direction for a weaker-setting spray, then spin the nozzle the other way and it creates a stronger spray – ideal for topping off any look and keeping it in place.
Prep according to your final look
“If your hairstyle demands volume, then washing it beforehand is your best bet to remove any oils that may weigh it down. Whereas if you want a sleek look, then not washing it is best to keep flyaways at bay. If your roots are a bit too greasy, you can get away with a bit of dry shampoo applied to the roots to absorb the excess oil – then, add a few drops of oil on the ends to make your locks look super-healthy and polished throughout.”
Practice on your friends
“If you want to master any hairstyle, my biggest tip is to practice on your friends’ or your children’s hair because, once you’ve done it on someone else, it’s much easier to apply the technique to your own hair. As hairstylists, we practice on a mannequin head before we move on to real people – this way, you can see what’s happening as you do it, so you have that reference when you style your own hair. That’s the secret behind all those women who can do their hair so well. What’s more, YouTube videos are great for hair education, too.”
Use equal sections to master Hollywood waves
“Classic Hollywood waves are a tricky hairstyle to create. If you want that ultra-polished wave, every section of hair you tong must have the same thickness and, when wrapped around the barrel, be held in the tong for the same amount of time, because this look really relies on uniformity. Having the same-sized sections, the same wave pattern and the same heat distribution across each section will create that seamless, rippled effect.”
Tap – don’t wrap – for a beachy, tousled texture
“When it comes to the Gisele wave, it’s all about effortlessness – it’s for the woman who doesn’t need an architecturally strong hairstyle and who doesn’t care if her hair is a little fuzzy or messy. Using curling tongs is the only way to get this kind of effect, but the secret lies in making the hair look like there are no tong marks. To do this, don’t wrap the entire strand of hair along the iron. Simply tap it with the iron instead, moving down the section of hair, bending it and giving it flips and flicks as you go along. You’ll get that tousled effect instead of a classic corkscrew.”
