Big names always flock to the annual Charles Finch/Chanel pre-BAFTA dinner, and this year’s party in London’s chic Mark’s Club was one of the most A-list yet. Timothée Chalamet, star of Call Me by Your Name, was man of the night. When he wasn’t busy taking selfies with admirers, he and his best friend, young French actor Stéphane Bak, flirted with Chanel ambassador and actress Ella Purnell, sneaking off to the terrace together between courses. Mick Jagger and Frances McDormand hugged like old friends and gossiped for hours by the bar; Margot Robbie, dressed in white Chanel, held court with Allison Janney, her on-screen mother in I, Tonya; Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’s Sam Rockwell sat with actress girlfriend Leslie Bibb and Gillian Anderson; and Hugh Grant stayed close to his television-producer girlfriend, Anna Eberstein. Billy Crudup was a big hit at his table, entertaining Naomi Watts, Poppy Delevingne and Kylie Minogue with his tall tales, while Ladybird director Greta Gerwig caught up with Black Panther stars Daniel Kaluuya and Letitia Wright at hers. Tessa Thompson, erudite star of Selma and Annihilation and a leading campaigner for the #MeToo movement, and Timothée Chalamet, both up for the Rising Star award, clinked champagne glasses and wished each other well. As the espresso martinis started to work their magic, all plans of catching an early one before the big night itself were happily abandoned.
