5 of the best luxury trailer stays
Rebel against the norm and swap your hotel reservation for one of these ultra-chic Airstream trailers. By OLIVE WAKEFIELD
EL COSMICO, Texas
In a calm stretch of Texan desert, just beyond art-hub Marfa, lies a curious flotilla of glowing lights. Not so much a hotel as a luxury commune, El Cosmico is known for its strange allure; first-timers have been said to book a return before their stay is over (and even hosted Beyoncé during an all-girls trip to the Lone Star State). It’s all down to beatnik hotelier Liz Lambert, who has imbibed each luxury trailer with a nomad spirit. Expect glossy Birchwood kitchenettes, Bertoia chairs and unusual treats in the mini-bar. The best feature of all, though, is the vast, star-spangled Texan sky.
INSIDER TIP: Book early and time your stay with the Trans-Pecos Festival of Music + Love, hosted on-site every fall.
THE DANIEL, Vienna
Vienna may be best-known for classical music and Sigmund Freud, but the Hotel Daniel is firmly on course to change that. This award-winning brand is a favorite with travel insiders, who skip the hotel and head straight for the mammoth 22ft Airstream parked in the gardens. What’s good enough for the hotel is good enough for the trailer is the philosophy here, so don’t be surprised by the pristine bed linen and freestanding bath tub.
INSIDER TIP: Look for the lopsided ship on the roof of the hotel – it’s a sculpture by esteemed Austrian artist Erwin Wurm.
CAMPING CA’SAVIO, Venice
These shiny, happy trailers may feel more Americana than Adriatic, but fear not – the al fresco way of life suits them perfectly well. Just a half-hour ferry ride from the bright lights of St Mark’s Basilica is where you’ll find Ca’Savio, home to Italy’s first airstream park. Each one sleeps up to four happy glampers who can expect all the trappings of a lush hotel room: plump double bed, hot shower and fully decked-out kitchenette. Make sure to hire a bike and wheel up the coastal road to the turquoise lagoon in Lio Piccolo, where you can see peach-feathered flamingos and pick vegetables from the gardens. Use the fresh fare for an Italian feast and star-gaze into the Venetian sky from under the canopied veranda of your silver stay.
INSIDER TIP: Don’t forget your gym kit – the site offers activities including outdoor yoga and Zumba.
GLAMPING AIRSTREAM, Andalucia
After cruising through sun-bleached Spanish pueblos, this futuristic trailer will certainly take you by surprise. It’s a dose of Americana in a rustic spot and perfect for anyone in search of a secluded stay. The family-run Glamping Airstream boasts its own private deck, complete with barbecue and sun-loungers; when the Andalusian heat gets too much, the enormous plunge pool is akin to heaven on earth.
INSIDER TIP: Head to the Atarazanas market in nearby Malaga for fresh produce to pop on the barbecue.
AUTOCAMP, Santa Barbara
This stretch of the West Coast is nicknamed the ‘American Riviera’, thanks to its great wine, glorious sunshine and retro-cool touches. Road-trippers should stop by Autocamp for the best nights’ sleep of their travels. Santa Barbara native Matthew Hoffman was tasked with creating a luxury stay in a compact space: flat-screen TVs fold down into polished dinettes, and sofas into sprawling beds. Imagine a midcentury-modern apartment, but to dolls’ house scale.
INSIDER TIP: Each trailer comes equipped with two bicycles for carousing down the famous beach strip.
