The Shoulder Bags We’re Lusting After This Season
From petite and structured to soft and slouchy, shoulder bags have never been more diverse – and there’s a style out there to suit every taste this season, says COLLEEN ROSS
Despite maxi totes making their way back onto the runways in recent seasons, the trend for compact, hands-free bags is still going strong – and FW24 has ushered in a smorgasbord of new styles to covet, from contemporary updates on archive classics to more experimental designs in eye-catching shapes and finishes.
Capturing the elegance of top-handle styles from the ’50s and ’60s, and perfectly in tune with the season’s trend for demure dressing, Saint Laurent’s ‘Voltaire’ bag comes in a chic half-moon shape and fastens with the label’s iconic interlocking logo, first designed by Cassandre in 1961. Meanwhile, Gucci’s ‘GG Milano’ is crafted from pillow-soft padded leather, debossed with the label’s monogram and with gleaming gold hardware. The key detail they both have in common? A detachable shoulder strap that doubles your carrying options.
To add a dose of modern minimalism to outfits, look no further than Jacquemus’ ‘Le Bisou Perle’. A fan favorite since its SS23 runway debut, it’s crafted from space-age metallic crinkled leather with a curved base and a bead-embellished strap. Elsewhere, embrace all-out ’90s style with Jil Sander’s croc-effect leather ‘Ghost’ bag. It will look effortlessly chic tucked under your arm at dinner parties.
Inspired by a style from its own archive, Chloé’s ‘Bracelet’ bag was a hit before it even appeared on the FW24 runway – Sienna Miller, Jerry Hall and her daughter Georgia May Jagger all wore one on the front row. The slouchy crescent shape and hoop handle embody the brand’s ’70s boho spirit, while the detachable strap means you can either wear it draped over your shoulder or cross-body for ease. Alternatively, if you’re looking for something with a touch more structure, then you’ll love Khaite’s ‘Simona’ bag. It’s crafted from statement snake-effect leather and has a distinctive elongated silhouette with ample space inside for essentials.
Some bags are so iconic, they don’t need a logo to get noticed, and that’s certainly true of Bottega Veneta’s mini ‘Parachute’ tote – the brand’s signature intrecciato weave speaks for itself. Similarly, The Row’s ‘Laurie’ bag exudes a quiet elegance. Crafted from smooth leather and suede, it’s minimally detailed with a gold clasp and has a timeless, vintage feel. Elsewhere, Alexander McQueen’s textured-leather ‘T-Bar’ tote is an opportunity to own a future classic. The first bag designed by new creative director Seán McGirr, it’s topped with a sculptural handle and has enough space inside for a wallet, glasses case and keys.
