The Met Gala 2022: Best Dressed
One of the biggest events on the fashion calendar, the Manhattan extravaganza marks the opening of the Costume Institute’s style exhibition, and has long been celebrated for its internet-breaking outfits and all-out red-carpet splendor. Here, we bring you the show-stopping looks from the Met Gala 2022 with its ‘gilded glamour’ dress code. Head to the Met Gala 2024 for all the news on next year's upcoming event…
Blake Lively in Atelier Versace
Blake Lively is always one to watch on the Met Gala red carpet, and in her role as official co-chair this year, she did not disappoint. Dressed by Atelier Versace, Lively stepped out in an iridescent pink gown complete with a voluminous bow that transformed into a cascading blue train, plus a sparkling tiara and elegant evening gloves – perfectly in keeping with the gilded glamour dress code.
Kendall Jenner in Prada
Kendall Jenner joined forces with Prada to pay tribute to the event’s glamorous theme with a modern-day spin. While the larger-than-life ruffled skirt took cues from the billowing silhouettes of the Gilded Age, the part-sheer, part-mesh studded top, inky palette and bleached brows gave the look a punkish edge.
Jodie Turner-Smith in Gucci
British star Jodie Turner-Smith made an eye-catching entrance in a vintage-inspired, flapper-style mini dress with a pleated pink chiffon train. Custom designed for the actor by Gucci’s Alessandro Michele, the dress was accessorized with a smattering of statement rings and chandelier earrings.
Kim Kardashian in vintage Jean Louis
While last year’s Met Gala saw her set the internet abuzz with her face-concealing Balenciaga bodysuit, this time round Kim Kardashian embraced the trend for vintage on the red carpet by delving into the American fashion archives. The dress in question was none other than Marilyn Monroe’s iconic 1962 Jean Louis sheath dress, which the Skims founder paired with peroxide-blonde hair and 18k white gold and diamond drop earrings by Cartier.
Glenn Close in Valentino
Iconic actor Glenn Close looked divine in this bold, caped ensemble in Valentino’s newly minted Pantone color ‘Pink PP’ – a vibrant fuchsia that dominated the maison’s FW22 collection. Close completed the look with matching Valentino Garavani shoes, a clutch and gloves in the ultra-saturated shade, as well as collarbone-grazing earrings in a complementary berry hue that perfectly offset the cape’s embroidery. This was regal red-carpet dressing at its finest.
Jessica Chastain in Gucci
Styled by A-list favorite Elizabeth Stewart, Oscar winner Jessica Chastain continued her stellar red-carpet run in go-to designer Gucci. One of a handful of attendees to embrace headwear, she topped off the sequinned scarlet gown with a chic coordinating turban for an impactful yet effortless statement.
Lily James in Atelier Versace
Versace has emerged as a recurring red-carpet favorite of actor Lily James, who once again turned to the Italian fashion house for this flawless evening look. Curated by stylist Rebecca Corbin Murray, the beaded, barely-there gown in an icy shade of blue was an ideal fit for the Pam & Tommy star.
Hailey Bieber in Saint Laurent
Often lauded for her impeccable off-duty outfits, Hailey Bieber gave a lesson in nailing the more-is-more Met Gala dress code while remaining true to one’s own sense of style. Teaming up with Hollywood stylist Karla Welch, the model emerged on the red carpet in a sleek backless dress with a thigh-high slit by Saint Laurent, dialling up the drama with a fluttering feathered cape.
Joan Smalls in Tom Ford
Dressed by honorary co-chair (and icon of American fashion) Tom Ford, supermodel Joan Smalls stunned in a cutting-edge ‘ribbon’ gown crafted from black silk tulle, which she styled note-perfectly with barely-there velvet sandals, a glossy, slicked-back ponytail, and over-the-elbow gloves that nodded to the gilded glamour theme.
Olivia Rodrigo in Atelier Versace
Monochrome dressing was the name of the game for Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo. For her Met Gala debut, the starlet teamed up with Atelier Versace for a resplendent outfit of top-to-toe purple, including a gleaming off-the-shoulder gown, sheer lilac opera gloves and a pumped-up platform sandal.
Dakota Johnson in Gucci
Labelled one of the best-dressed women in Hollywood for good reason, Dakota Johnson impressed once more at the fashion event of the year with a little help from long-time stylist Kate Young. Her Gucci look comprised a plush velvet robe over a sheer fringed bodysuit, with elegant shoulder-skimming earrings by Messika to accessorize.
Phoebe Bridgers in Jonathan Simkhai
Fresh off her top-billing performance at Coachella, former PORTER cover star Phoebe Bridgers arrived at the Met in an intricately embellished floor-length dress by New York designer Jonathan Simkhai, striking the perfect balance between contemporary and elegant. The glittering look was complemented by a suite of impactful and refined jewels by Cartier, along with a crimson lip and matching glossy manicure.
Maude Apatow in Miu Miu
Euphoria star Maude Apatow demonstrated the power of pitch-perfect hair and makeup in rounding out a red-carpet look. While her beaded off-the-shoulder bustier gown by Miu Miu was a standout in its own right, the outfit was infused with an extra dash of old-world glamour by way of a slicked, side-parted bob and a vampish deep-berry lip.
Kaia Gerber in Alexander McQueen
Kaia Gerber looked ever the ethereal beauty in an exquisite, semi-sheer silver creation by Alexander McQueen. The model kept accessories and jewels to a minimum and simply opted for two diamond and pearl-embellished hair pins, allowing the dress to make maximum shining impact.
Rosalía in Givenchy
A famously fearless dresser, Spanish singer-songwriter Rosalía wowed in a form-fitting, heavily embellished creation by Givenchy’s Matthew Williams that was perfectly attuned to the maximalist vibe for the evening, and polished off the look with a pair of sculptural sunglasses.
Kerry Washington in Tory Burch
Powerhouse Hollywood stylist Law Roach was the brain behind actor Kerry Washington’s impeccable red-carpet moment at this year’s Met Gala. Designed by uptown New York style legend Tory Burch, the floor-length dress played a sensual sheer bodice and leg-baring thigh split against ladylike gloves, ruffles and towering Jimmy Choo sandals to make an edgy-yet-elegant statement.
