5 ways to wear a gray suit
Whether it’s dressed up or down, styled with color or monotone, the gray suit is a surprisingly versatile look. Taking our cues from the FW19 collections, we show you how to style yours now
OFF-DUTY
New Yorker Alexander Wang is well known for his vibrant interpretations of urban street style. This season, the designer brought uptown downtown, with deconstructed tailoring like his gray two-piece with trompe l’oeil leather paneling. For a look that speaks of relaxed formality, simply team it with a ribbed, stretch cotton tank (in white to keep the palette fresh) and a pair of statement platform trainers – Balenciaga’s ‘Triple S’ style have serious maximalist energy.
POP OF COLOR
While you should never worry that too much gray is boring (more on that shortly), combining your suit with a little color is a dead-cert way to add a bit of modern fashion savvy to your day-to-day look. And when we say color, we mean color. The highlighter hue of an orange Victoria Beckham turtleneck, for example, will look great with Totême’s fitted blazer and matching suit pants. Gold jewelry will work to bring out the color and add a final polish to the look.
50 SHADES OF GRAY
Well known for his love of bright colors and patterns, Dries Van Noten changed pace this season, opening his Fall 19 show with a run of all-gray tailored looks, styled with coats, shirts and accessories in an assortment of shades. Take the plunge into gray-on-gray by teaming Van Noten’s double-breasted two-piece with Low Classic’s light gray trench and The Row’s barely-there strappy sandals for a feminine and languid silhouette.
WORKWEAR
No office wardrobe is complete without a reliable gray suit that you can throw on every day to report for duty. Stella McCartney’s single-buttoned iteration is about as perfect as they come. For a more polished office look – and to stay looking smart when the blazer comes off – team it with a simple cotton shirt. A pair of heels and a statement white bag are the perfect finishing touches.
A NIGHT OUT
The beauty of the gray suit is that, with just a few simple outfit tweaks, it works seamlessly for day-to-night dressing. Proving that a gray two-piece may soon become the dark horse of your partywear arsenal is Prada’s hourglass-shaped jacket with matching tapered pants. Style it simply with a white camisole and statement earrings – XXL crystal showstoppers by Isabel Marant are the perfect desk-to-dancefloor accessory.
