Mick and Bianca Jagger’s wedding, 1971

Against the backdrop of the French Riviera, Mick Jagger chose to marry Nicaraguan socialite Bianca Pérez-Mora Macias in the seaside town of Saint-Tropez on May 13, 1971. Their wedding caused a media frenzy, shutting down the small fishing town with their civil ceremony in the mayor’s office, followed by a Roman Catholic ceremony in the romantic 17th-century Saint Anne Chapel – a picturesque spot high above the town, with its gurgling fountains and shuttered sandstone houses framed by leafy plane trees. Dressed in a white Yves Saint Laurent tuxedo jacket and long bias-cut silk skirt, the bride walked down the aisle to a soundtrack of songs from the film Love Story played on a harmonium. The crowded audience was filled with rock’n’roll royalty including Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney, who all flew in from London by private jet to join the wedding party. In the most stylish of exits from the ceremony, the newlyweds sped off in Jagger’s Bentley to join the reception at the Café des Arts for caviar, coupes of champagne and the signature Tropézienne tart, and the party that ensued captured all the raffish glamor and hedonism one could only expect from the Rolling Stones’ frontman. Guests including Brigitte Bardot and Julie Christie danced the night away to music from soul legends Bobby Keyes and Doris Troy, while Jagger took to the stage to join them for a jam session before continuing the party at the legendary Hotel Byblos. Byblos’ Riviera Suite also served as the honeymoon venue; a sprawling, colorful Provençal house overlooking the pool, which can still be rented today.
