Make it work for work: Stripes

Stripes are to summer what knitwear is to winter; the mere sight of a Breton can transport your mind to the French Riviera. And, this season, the neutral of the print world is no longer reserved for out of office – seaside stripes can inject escapism into your work wardrobe, too. Here’s how…

THE DRESS

Bold stripes have the power to anchor directional silhouettes and add edge to minimalistic shapes. But make sure you factor in the right footwear to tie the look together: modernize monochrome colors with a pop of fuchsia and if you prefer candy stripes, choose a neutral shoe to temper the print’s punchy feel.

THE SHIRT

The formality usually associated with a pinstriped shirt does not apply here. Emerging designers Monse and Marques’Almeida opted for pumped-up prints and used their flair for deconstruction to create statement shirting; think maxi cuffs and billowing hems. Balance the volume with neatly tailored pants, a blazer in a neutral navy or off-white, and pointed pumps.

THE SKIRT

The vertically striped skirt is a sartorial secret weapon that gives the illusion of longer, slimmer limbs. But don’t fear horizontal stripes – they add a graphic edge to the humble pencil. Worn with a plain cotton tee and killer heels, this is the perfect boardroom-to-bar outfit.
