Chances are your very first pair of earrings were delicate sleepers – and just as charming, but with more adult appeal, come innumerable riffs on this jewelry mainstay. We’re talking Jennifer Fisher’s eternally chic hoops, Sophie Bille Brahe’s pearl-embellished iterations or Suzanne Kalan’s diamond-studded designs, all of which would make an enviable addition to your current jewelry collection. But what is it that makes this understated shape such an enduring classic? Kalan believes that, beyond their infinite wearability, there is something innately flattering about hoop earrings. “They suit every face shape and have an air of contemporary elegance that works no matter what your age or style. I think every woman should own at least one pair of statement hoops,” says the LA-based jeweler. “They’re casual, elegant and stylish all at once. Plus, they work with any outfit – dressy or casual.” In fact, when it came to creating her own take on the hoop, Kalan was keen to tap into this versatility. “My classic hoop is 45mm in size, which is large enough to make a statement but small enough to wear daily.” Her huggies, adorned with asymmetric baguette-cut diamonds, promise to enliven everything from blue denim to oversized suiting and all-black ensembles.

For London-based Anna Jewsbury, the needle-pushing jeweler behind Completedworks, the allure of the hoop earring lay in remastering this ubiquitous style. “At Completedworks, we seem to forever have this fascination with reimagining classic pieces. In fact, many of our pieces bear echoes of classic styles, albeit with a unique or unusual reinterpretation, expressed through some unexpected accent or detail.” Studded with white topaz, Jewsbury’s interlocking hoop earrings catch candlelight beautifully, making them a fail-safe addition to any date-night outfit.
