The Top 4 TikTok Beauty Trends Worth Trying
A virtual breeding ground for upcoming beauty trends and innovative hacks, TikTok’s most popular makeup, skin and hair looks for 2023 will amplify and enhance your beauty routine for the better, says MALENA HARBERS
The new modern-romantic makeup
With Barbiecore gaining momentum in the run up to the Barbie film’s summer premiere, it’s no wonder that coquette beauty has also emerged as one the of the most popular beauty trends on TikTok this year, with a whopping 1.8 billion views for #coquetteaesthetic. The premise? A soft and pretty, hyper-femme look with a distinctly modern, grown-up twist. But Barbie’s signature hot-pink hue is more subdued and prettier in pastel with this trend. Think flushed-looking, rosy cheeks, pearlescent finishes on the cupid’s bow, bridge of the nose and tops of the eyelids, candyfloss hues, plumped-up, glossy lips, topped off with a sultry winged eyeliner and doe-eyed lashes. If you only dip your toe into this trend, make it a reliance on a glow-giving pink blush and flirty, defined lashes for the most wearable, everyday look.
The Notox trend
While smoother, firmer skin is always on-trend, alternatives to achieving this effect with injectibles and Botox are gaining in popularity on TikTok, with #Notox raking up more than 10 million views so far this year. LED and microcurrent devices are the most popular at-home beauty tools this trend has tapped into. LED masks work to plump out fine lines and wrinkles by encouraging an uptick in your skin’s collagen production – the building blocks of a firm, taut complexion. When you search ‘Nuface’ on TikTok, you’re met with a vast array of videos of people trying out the now-famous microcurrent device. This muscle-firming microcurrent tool fits snugly between the contours of the face, working painlessly over the jawline, cheek and brows. Use it three times a week after applying NuFace Gel Primer to tighten skin and streamline features, or just as a one-off to give you the perfect pre-event, pre-makeup ‘refresher’ – a favorite trick of celebrity makeup artist and queen of red-carpet makeup Pati Dubroff.
’70s hair is back
If you’re not a fan of the choppy ’90s shags that are everywhere, tap into the newest hair trend to take over TikTok – the feathered curls and curtain bangs that reigned supreme in the ’70s are big, with over 72 million views for #70shairstyle. The look relies on lots of layers and brushed-out, soft waves, so get out your curling irons, hot rollers and volumizing spray. It also leans heavily on the curtain-bangs trend, a TikTok classic that’s here to stay. These cheekbone-grazing layers work for so many face shapes, hair types and cuts – they have the power to take flat lengths to new heights by instantly boosting volume and movement.
The 30-second smoky eye
If you like a lived-in, smudgey smoky-eye look, this viral TikTok hack is one to try. It’s a nod to the Y2K #indiesleaze makeup look that’s growing in popularity on the social platform (with 105 million views), characterized by a mix of ’90s-grunge eyeliner, messy eye glitter and balmy lips. All you need are mascara and a black kohl pencil eyeliner, but the aesthetic is as much about technique as it is about the products. Start by rimming the inner lower and upper lash lines, then take a tiny bit of liner across the top lash line as well. Close your eyes and use your index fingers or a dense eye-smudger brush to really blend the color together in an upwards and outwards movement. Top it off with mascara and a slick of glossy lip balm for an effortless, glam-grunge, night-out eye look.
