Get dressed with Linda Tol

Dutch-born stylist, buyer and influencer LINDA TOL is a walking barometer for I-woke-up-like-this cool. If you’re looking to emulate her signature insouciance with a tough, tailored edge, this is how it’s done…

Fashion

Less really is more

“When I was younger, I used to try a little bit too hard – I’d wear too many crazy prints or statement pieces all at once – but in recent years my look has become more sophisticated. Now, a typical outfit for me is a pair of boyfriend jeans and a T-shirt, but I’ll finish it off with some super-girly slingbacks. Comfort is the most important factor for me when I’m piecing together a look, so I live in denim. Style is all about personality; it’s an expression of your individuality, so if you don’t feel comfortable in what you’re wearing, then it won’t feel authentic. My style is quite diverse, but it’s always really recognizably me.”

“I love what The Row is doing right now; the latest collection was so timeless and classic, you could mix and match those pieces endlessly – not only are they beautiful, the quality is also exquisite. The strappy nude sandals are top of my wish list this season. I am also a huge fan of Attico – [co-founders] Giorgia Tordini and Gilda Ambrosio are making the kind of vintage-yet-modern clothes everyone wants to wear right now; it’s so cool. I think everything Simon Porte Jacquemus does is incredible, from his designs, to the story behind the brand, to the imagery he creates. His pieces aren’t timeless, but they are clean and classic in a very particular way. Plus, the price point isn’t too high, so it’s a great brand to invest in. As for what Jonathan Anderson is doing at Loewe? It’s not just fashion – it’s art.”

Pack smart

“When I go on vacation I always try to stick to one small suitcase, with the exception of fashion week, of course. My case mainly consists of basics like denim shorts, a great tee and white button-down shirt, then I’ll add some interesting pieces like a sequin mini dress or crazy prints, along with jewelry, bags, sunglasses and shoes. I mix and match these playful elements to build up lots of different looks. I love swimsuits because they look great on the beach but are also great for layering. Faithfull The Brand and Attico are great for easy summer dresses, while Re/Done is my go-to for denim shorts and skirts.”

Eat yourself glowy

“I don’t wear that much makeup, especially during the summer, so having a good skincare routine is really important. I use a foam cleanser, wear SPF every day and I’m always trying different masks and serums. I love going for treatments so I always make time for a monthly facial. Currently my favorite products are Aesop’s Primrose Facial Cleansing Masque and anything by Susanne Kaufmann. I travel a lot for work and flying can really dry out your skin, so I try to counteract this by ensuring I never wear makeup on the plane, drink loads of water and avoid alcohol. I actually eat pretty healthily all the time – I am dairy- and gluten-intolerant so I avoid those foods and make sure to eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. If I eat junk food, I can see it in my skin almost immediately. When it comes to haircare, the most important thing is getting a great cut. I always go to the same amazing stylist in Milan. I feel like making a change to my style soon – I’m not sure what exactly, but I trust him so much that I’ll leave it up to him.”

Be a bag lady

“Recently I’ve gotten really into jewelry and started to invest in special pieces that I can wear every day, like my Piaget necklace and vintage gold Rolex. I’ve also built up a collection of antique diamond rings. However, handbags are my real weakness. I never feel fully dressed without a great handbag. I change mine every day because I always want to wear the one that will work best with my outfit. I honestly think I am slightly addicted – I can’t stop buying them. My latest purchase was a vintage Fendi bag that I bought just this morning.”
