Everybody’s wearing plaid
The heritage print is back in a big way as fashion’s love of this ’90s style signature continues
In a magnificent heritage-grunge style mashup (equal parts Cher Horowitz, Kurt Cobain and No Doubt-era Gwen Stefani), designers have offered an abundance of plaid in their FW19 collections, with check garments available in every style and color imaginable. For tangible proof that square doesn’t mean boring, look to the street-style set for inspiration on how to wear yours. Head-to-toe tailoring is a bold place to start. Givenchy’s check suit is seriously covetable and can also be worn as separates, styled with monochrome basics. Plaid outerwear is another throw-on-and-go way to make a statement. See Stella McCartney’s Prince of Wales trench and JW Anderson’s cape-effect check coat for garments that channel old-school British elegance. Team with ’90s-inflected accessories such as combat boots, crossbody bags and angular shades for a thoroughly modern mismatched look.
