5 of the best Brooklyn hotels
When New York Fashion Week rolls into Manhattan on September 6, head across the river to Brooklyn and escape the hustle at these hot hangouts. By OLIVE WAKEFIELD
WYTHE HOTEL
This is Brooklyn’s hero hotel, the place that paved the way for all the other scene-setting stays in the ’hood. But the Wythe is so much more than just a crash pad: it’s a creative, social and work hub for locals, Manhattanites and out-of-towners alike (the hotel even keeps two bunk-bed rooms free for touring bands in need of some shut-eye). Haute hipster interiors, craft cocktails and epic sunsets viewed from the wraparound roof terrace keep the in-crowd returning time and time again. wythehotel.com
THE WILLIAMSBURG HOTEL
It may be the new kid on the block, but this hotel has fast become a Brooklyn classic. Perhaps it’s something to do with its colossal rooftop pool, sweeping vistas of the Hudson River or prime place in the beating heart of the borough, on Wythe Avenue. Design studio Michaelis Boyd has created a luxe, industrial vibe – plush rooms with parquet flooring, factory windows and jewel-colored velvet furniture – that pulls in a stylish crowd weekend in, weekend out. DUMBO HOUSE
The hospitality world always waits with baited breath for the latest Soho House incarnation, and this one sure doesn’t disappoint. Set across the top two floors of a former 19th-century coffee warehouse, it’s everything you’d expect from Nick Jones’ crew and so much more: there’s a rooftop pool so close to the East River you could be swimming in it, an in-house Cecconi’s (the brand’s beloved Italian eatery) and, of course, interior eye-candy at every turn. dumbohouse.com
THE HOXTON
For its latest outpost, this East London hotel group has found a new spiritual home in Williamsburg. Choose between a ‘Roomy’ or ‘Cosy’ suite in their signature ’70s style, all dark lacquered wood, brass fittings and Eames chairs. There are thoughtful details like the carefully curated bookshelves in each room and daily breakfast bags to keep hunger at bay, but the main event has to be the Hox How To workshops, imparting life lessons to chic Brooklynites every week. thehoxton.com
1 HOTEL BROOKLYN BRIDGE
The words ‘eco-luxe’ and ‘low-impact’ can often be smoke and mirrors in the hospitality world, but this boutique stay remains true to its mission. The hotel is run on wind power, built from upcycled wood (repurposed from Coney Island’s boardwalk), and uses pumps to collect rainwater to help irrigate the local Brooklyn Bridge Park. With hemp-blend mattresses and wood-paneled rooms that would be at home on a Balinese eco-retreat, this is a concept that will encourage all travelers to think green. 1hotels.com
