Celebrity Makeup Artist Katie Jane Hughes Shares Her Favorite Beauty Hacks
One of the A-list’s favorite makeup artists reveals the beauty tip she got from Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, why Ashley Graham keeps her grounded, how to really make your makeup last and why an old credit card could be your best new beauty device…
AM
I read that Salma Hayek doesn’t wash her face in the morning…
…so those oils that naturally develop while she sleeps almost become part of her skin prep the next day. I love that ethos, as I’ve never been a fan of over-cleansing, over-exfoliating or overdoing anything for my skin in general. In the morning, I simply refresh my skin with a toner, such as Natura Bissé Diamond Mist spray or Chantecaille’s Purifying and Exfoliating Phytoactive Solution, then sometimes a serum and maybe a face cream. If I’m filming for Instagram, I just use an SPF from La Roche-Posay or Glowscreen SPF30 from Supergoop! – which doubles as a primer. I have all the devices, too, but am a big fan of the Ziip Beauty one, as it has an app that helps you figure out what to do.
I don’t use much skincare under my makeup…
…it can cause it to slip and slide during the day – especially in summer. If you use a product just where you need it (and not all over the face), you definitely get the most out of your makeup. If you struggle to get your makeup to last all day, try washing your face but don’t put anything on except your foundation – then see what happens throughout the day. You can usually see how a base treats your skin – where you need to compensate for dryness or where it’s naturally oilier and needs no creams.
I use an old credit card to exfoliate
When I wake up puffy…
I have Hashimoto’s disease…
…which is a thyroid condition. It’s apparently quite common and the advice is to avoid gluten, as it can exacerbate any autoimmune condition. The best I’ve ever felt was when I was on the autoimmune paleo diet, which is anti-inflammatory, so no tomatoes, grains, potatoes, seeds or nuts. It really helped me feel good – and my anxiety ups and downs completely diminished. I do believe that what we eat really makes a huge difference.
Kate Bosworth gave me the best advice
She’s a client of mine and she posted on her Instagram that if something you’re worrying about isn’t going to matter in five years, then don’t worry about it for more than five minutes. It resonated, as I am a natural worrier, so I got ‘5x5’ tattooed on my arm. I later discovered it was from Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Now, the tattoo makes me look like I’m a die-hard fan, but I’ve never watched an episode in my life!
PM
I love anything that lightly exfoliates
Before an event…
…I don’t do much the night before, for fear of breaking out. It’s always best to do a treatment a few days before a big event – not the night before – in case your skin reacts. But I will eat around 5pm and drink loads of water, as eating to feel my best is my biggest beauty prep for any event.

I always sleep with lip balm on
I apply loads of it all over my mouth and over the lip line. In the morning, it’s plumped up your lips like crazy for the fullest, most juicy lips ever.
