When it comes to shopping a little more mindfully, it can be tricky to know where to start, especially for swimwear. Thankfully, many swimwear brands, like those in our NET SUSTAIN edit, are making environmentally conscious practices their top priority.

Leading the way is Australian brand Matteau, which has pledged to use as many responsibly sourced, regenerated and recycled materials in its collections as possible. A true investment, its ‘The Square’ one-piece is made from 80% recycled nylon – developed using waste generated in the fiber manufacturing process – and has a timeless square neckline. It can even double as a bodysuit when you aren’t at the beach. Elsewhere, Marysia’s ‘Chesapeake’ swimsuit is cut from scalloped seersucker blended with 88% recycled fibers and comes in the brand’s eye-catching ‘Orchid’ pink shade. Wear it poolside with retro cat-eye sunglasses, adding a pair of denim shorts for trips to the beach bar.

Meanwhile, brands such as Lido and Maygel Coronel are committed to producing swimwear in the countries they are founded in order to reduce their carbon footprint. Supporting local craftsmanship in Colombia, Maygel Coronel’s ‘Agora’ bikini is decorated with signature floral appliqués and has a flattering wrap-effect top, while Lido’s ‘Undici’ bikini was made by artisans in Northern Italy with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring it not only fits well but will last for many vacations to come.

Finally, to care for your swimwear between wears, pop it in a reusable washing bag specially designed to filter out the tiny plastic microfibers that are generated when we wash clothes – and can end up in our rivers and oceans – and put on a gentle wash cycle at the lowest temperature. Then, allow your swimwear to dry naturally to protect the fabric and prevent the color from fading.
