5 Reasons Gabriela Hearst Is A Force For Change In The Fashion Industry

Despite launching her eponymous label just six years ago, GABRIELA HEARST has quickly become one of the most influential designers at work today. Last year, Hearst’s success reached dizzying new heights when she was announced as the creative director of Chloé, ushering in a new era at the Parisian powerhouse. However, it’s Hearst’s ability to blend craftsmanship and cutting-edge design with a focus on sustainability that sets her apart. Here, the Uruguayan designer’s friend NADIA NARAIN – an author, yogi and self-care specialist – showcases standout pieces from the FW21 collection and explains why, in her eyes, Hearst is positively reshaping the fashion landscape

Her work makes women feel seen

“The first Gabriela Hearst piece I ever owned was a dress Gabriela gave me while we were on holiday together. It’s blue and embellished with hand-sewn rubies – totally incredible; it’s like wearing a piece of jewelry. She said, ‘This is a dress for a queen, and you should dress like a queen.’ It’s the type of beautiful, ornate piece I would never have chosen for myself because I didn’t see myself in that way. That ability to lift other women up extends to everything Gabriela does. I know from friends who work with her that she is vocal about the fact that her success is down to the strength of her team. She always gives credit to each person for their talent and what they bring to the table. She sees people.”

She’s fascinated with sustainability

“Gabriela is constantly thinking about the planet and what effect we, as people, have on it. I’m always learning how our choices impact the world around us from her. You can feel that authenticity and ethos in all her designs. I think many women now feel like they have a responsibility to the planet and understand that the clothes they wear play a huge part in that – whether it’s the fibers they’re crafted from or the way in which they’re produced; the clothes we invest in have a ripple effect.”

Her clothes are transformative

“Gabriela’s clothes are powerful and you feel powerful when you wear them, but at the same time they’re still incredibly feminine. Gabriela has a really masterful way of creating pieces that tap into your sensuality without revealing too much; she understands that the most powerful thing about fashion is how it makes women feel.”

The thread of continuity is that Gabriela is always drawn to strong women who dressed for themselves and no one else. You really feel like you can channel these brilliant women when you wear Gabriela’s clothes

She’s a woman designing for women

“I really think a big part of Gabriela’s appeal is that she’s a woman, designing for women and giving them the clothes she knows they really need. Gabriela’s collections are all inspired by great women throughout history. Each season, Gabriela does a ton of research on her chosen subject and even carries a photograph of the women in question everywhere she goes. The thread of continuity is that Gabriela is always drawn to strong women who dressed for themselves and no one else. You really feel like you can channel these brilliant women when you wear Gabriela’s clothes.”

Her designs stand the test of time

“I am really beginning to refine my daily uniform, and Gabriela’s recycled cashmere jumpers are a big part of my closet. They come in a rainbow of colors and every time I wear one it always receives compliments. I don’t like seasonal pieces; I’m only drawn to clothes I know I can wear again and again. Over the years, I’ve realized it’s so important to buy a few items you love instead of loads that you just like. The magic of Gabriela’s designs is that they look incredibly polished, but they’re also comfortable and you can style them up or down to work for any occasion.”
