Everybody’s Wearing Bright Green

Fantasy may be one of the key tenets of fashion, but despite this cerebral emphasis on escapism, many of the industry’s designers and power players are known for sticking to a decidedly muted palette when it comes to styling themselves. So it is definitely worth taking note when a color – particularly an eye-popping one – becomes the shade du jour.

This season, bright green, one of the most unlikely colors of the rainbow, has become positively ubiquitous. Perhaps the hue’s hopeful symbolism is behind its sudden popularity – green is synonymous with growth, harmony and new beginnings, all of which sound pretty appealing right now. It could, of course, also be down to Daniel Lee’s signature ‘Bottega Green’. The British designer – who recently rocked the fashion world with his sudden departure from Italian brand Bottega Veneta – made the color something of a signature for the remastered heritage house. Then again, it could be part of a bigger movement, representative of the optimism and joy that dominated the FW21 collections.

Whatever the reason, the industry’s obsession with bright green shows no signs of abating. Arbiters of taste, including Copenhagen Fashion Week CEO Cecilie Thorsmark and creative consultant Ilenia Toma, have been spotted incorporating sartorial serotonin into their usually minimal looks in the form of bright-green coats and jackets by the likes of Danish brand Remain Birger Christensen. Layered over your daily uniform, statement outerwear is a remarkably easy way for even the most understated dressers to experiment with new shades. Similarly, colorful separates can be styled up or down, depending on your mood. Of course, the easiest way to freshen up your look is by adding a green handbag – a classic crossbody style by Alexander McQueen is an investment piece that will transcend the seasons.
