Makeup Artist Violette Shares The Skin And Makeup Hacks She Swears By
The epitome of French-girl cool, makeup artist and content creator VIOLETTE tells NEWBY HANDS about her pared-back skin regimen, her two-minute smoky eye (no brush required) and the secret to her famous ‘French-kiss lip’
I don’t wash my face in the morning
If you apply great skincare before bed and your skin delivers good natural oils overnight, you don’t want to get rid of either, so I just splash my face and then apply my Boum-Boum Milk and the Ultra Violette Queen Screen Luminizing Skinscreen Serum SPF50. I used to use 10 products every day but, now, I have no time and my skin’s doing better with this routine. If I’m still short on time, I’ll use Guerlain’s KissKiss Bee Glow on my lips – I still haven’t found the best concealer, so that’s a struggle – and some perfume, Avec Amour, and I’m out the door.
I start every day with tongue-scraping
It’s not very glamorous but, following the Ayurvedic approach to good health, it’s where we have a lot of toxins, so it’s important for the tongue to be really clean. If you wake up and drink a glass of water, then you put all the toxins back in your body. Now, there’s not one day I don’t start like this, as it immediately makes me feel fresh and awake. I had stomach issues for many years, so I started to do a few things like this to help – and it’s worked.
My go-to look is a red lip or a blue smoky eye
The best red lipstick is the 880 Magnetic Red Rouge by Guerlain; there’s no other red that I use – I’m very picky. My smoky eye is so easy: I take the eyeshadow and rub it really well on to the fingertip of my ring finger and then press and pat it on, all over my eyelid and under the eye. Then I use the middle finger to soften the edges and, finally, I use a cotton bud with a little water to clean up under the eye and under the flick. Two fingers and one cotton bud and I’m done in two minutes. I always use Guerlain Terracotta bronzer. I’m not going to go in the sun, but I do want a little hint of a suntan with that sun-kissed effect. Also, the shades are excellent.
I’m pregnant, so I’m making an extra effort with my body care
Even though stretch marks have nothing to do with using a lotion, as it’s a genetic thing, I do use the Pratima oils created by Ayurvedic physician Dr. Pratima Raichur. She makes oils that are based on your dosha (energy type) – mine is Vata, and the scent of her Vata Rejuvenating Body Oil is just insane. To be honest, I’ve never found that one perfect product – ideally, I’d like the skin on my body to bounce like the skin on my face, but I can’t find the perfect body-care cream to make this happen.
My best beauty tip is my ‘French-kiss lip’
It’s something I created myself. I put red lipstick on and then, by tapping my fingertip along the lip line, I just blur the edge. It gives the lips a pout and lessens that strict definition of wearing a red lip, as it gives a very sensual effect. If someone is wary of wearing red because it makes their lips smaller, then this does the opposite, as it helps give you that pouty feel.
I’ve trained myself not to get jet lag
After all the trips I’ve done, I now barely suffer from jet lag. When I travel with my daughter, I just don’t sleep, so going from New York to Paris is atrocious for the first day – but then I crash and, the next day, I’m fine. When I travel on my own, I get on the plane, tie my hair up, cover my skin in the Boum-Boum cream, drink tons of water and take a strong antihistamine, which knocks me out, as I’m very sensitive [to medication].
The night before an event
I double-cleanse with a face oil, as I do every night, then I spread a big scoop of my C’est la Cream onto my skin and plaster my face with it – and the next day, I have ‘bouncy’, moisturized skin. I used to have so many creams and serums, but I haven’t noticed a difference since I stopped using them. In fact, my skin is better now, using less, by just letting the one product do its job.
