The Makeup Looks To Wear With… Fuchsia And Red
With fuchsia still holding strong as the color of the moment (Valentino’s custom Pantone shade of hot pink defined its AW collection), and red being the other scorching shade to be seen in this fall (Alaïa, Versace and Alexander McQueen all paid homage), selecting makeup looks to wear with these bold hues can be difficult. Here, MALENA HARBERS shares the rules to power-pairing the right way
Match or contrast your lip color
There’s something modern about the old-school beauty convention of matching your lipstick to your outfit. But the key to keeping this look fresh is to choose a shade that is one tone away from the color you’re wearing instead of an exact match. Just as appealing is a color clash of fuchsia and red. With this look you can go as deep or as bright as you want with the contrasting shade. Try a fuchsia mini paired with a deep oxblood lip to really dial up the drama, or a crimson maxi with a sheer rosy lip for easy evening elegance. It often takes trial and error to discover which of these punchy pigments works best for your skin tone. However, since fuchsia’s cool undertones can be difficult to wear, celebrity makeup pro Pati Dubroff suggests layering a cool coral with any blue-toned pink to help make the shade more wearable. For both looks, you’ll still need a little eye definition, too, but keep it clean with a slick of black liner drawn as close to the upper lash line as possible – or apply along the inner rim only.
Play with texture
Whether you’re color-contrasting or moving towards a matching aesthetic, your lip finish can make a huge difference to keeping the look youthful rather than dated. Satin, silk or high-shine pieces look best with a velvet or matte lip, whereas textured patterns, knits and chiffons call for a creamy or uber-glossy finish. Skin should be super-polished, too, but still fresh: the Hourglass Ambient Soft Glow Liquid Foundation is great for achieving this, as it conceals imperfections and blurs out fine lines, but you’ll still get that clean, natural skin look. Then, use Pat McGrath Labs Skin Fetish: Divine Blush, which comes in a huge range of shades for all skin tones and delivers a diffused hit of color to mimic a natural flush.
Go nude
If wearing color is enough of a statement for you, stick to a nude lip – think polished not matte, which can be quite aging and flat – and nearly naked eyes. Choose a nude eyeshadow that has a pearlescent or satiny finish, or add a dollop of clear eye gloss to the center of lids, layered over a nude eyeshadow for a textured effect. Again, this is all about looking clean, finished and polished, not unnatural. The best way to inject a hit of color here is with your blush. Stick to a natural eye but add definition with a black or dark brown liner and a few coats of a fluttery mascara.
