The trench coat has been a perennial favorite in fall/winter wardrobes since the beginning of the 20th century, worn by style icons ranging from Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe to Alexa Chung and Kate Moss. But as the mercury continues to drop in northern climes, a cozier version is this season’s Scandi offering. And, accustomed to creating functional fashion for long, cold Scandinavian winters, Swedish label Stand Studio is perfectly positioned to put a playful spin on this classic piece.

Crafted from a fuzzy faux fur in a rich honey hue, this bear-like belted coat is the ultimate wardrobe chameleon. Pair with Chloé’s Scandi-style Fair Isle sweater, tucked in to Goldsign’s high-rise stonewash jeans, for a contemporary take on Nordic dressing. Saint Laurent military boots, chunky gold-tone Jennifer Fisher hoop earrings and a buttery-soft Loewe bucket bag add a down-to-earth polish. And don’t forget to pop a tube of Aesop’s hand balm in your bag to ward off dry winter skin.

Come evening, an overcoat can be transformed when worn with a slinky slip dress to perfectly exude a 1930s elegance. Rosetta Getty’s bias-cut dress, in an earthy brown silk, is a refined choice. By Far’s understated ‘Amber Baby’ bag, with its grab handle and croc-print finish, Manolo Blahnik kitten heels and Kenneth Jay Lane hoops will add a modern, minimalist edge. With a smoky undertone of cardamom and leather, which evokes the scent of an open fire, a spritz of Le Labo’s Santal 33 provides the perfect finishing touch.
