For SS22, designers are indulging in the flirtatious freedom offered by the mini dress. Short, sharp and perennially chic, the mini skirt – first popularized in the 1960s – proffers that enduring sense of spirited rebellion that has captivated us ever since. With versatility in mind, there really is a mini for every occasion and taste this season. Isabel Marant, purveyor of Parisian bohemia, channeled that breezy beatnik look with billowing chiffon dresses in artistic prints that are perfect paired with slouchy boots; and Saint Laurent showcased the sleek versatility of a tuxedo-style mini. Meanwhile, Valentino souped up the saturation with a striking, cut-out mini in the newly registered Pantone color Valentino Pink – arguably one of this season’s must-wear shades.

For a softer variation on this pretty hue, there is a pastel-pink offering in Jacquemus exclusive NET-A-PORTER capsule collection; its sporty collar and rib-knit texture makes it ideal when worn with sneakers for days spent in the city. Elsewhere, Alexander McQueen’s bandeau-style denim iteration will look effortlessly cool layered over a crisp white tee.

If you’re heading to an event, opt for dresses with strappy detailing, such as Khaite’s minimalist black design – or Magda Butrym’s technicolor ruched piece with a cherry print, which taps straight into the Y2K trend. But whatever your style, there is a lot to love about this season’s diminutive dresses.
