You haven’t lived until… you’ve slept underwater
Water, water everywhere… Immerse yourself in the tranquil splendor of the Indian Ocean at the world’s very first underwater residence. By FREDDIE BRAUN
For marine enthusiasts looking to fulfill their lifelong dream of sleeping on the ocean floor, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island’s forthcoming addition to its expansive portfolio will be an experience not to be missed when it opens its doors in November. Submerged 16ft under sea level in the tropical Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, this exclusive residence, dubbed The Muraka (‘coral’ in the Maldives’ local language, Dhivehi), blends seamlessly with its azure environment. Boasting 180-degree views of marine and coral life via a curved acrylic dome, a king-sized bedroom on the lower level (plus bedrooms on the upper level: it sleeps nine), a powder room, a gym, butler’s quarters, bar, dining room and more, this two-floor thalassic domicile fuses state-of-the-art-technology with cutting-edge design. After taking a dip in the infinity-edge pool or unwinding on the sunset-facing deck, make your way down the spiral staircase and descend below sea level where the gentle, subaqueous hum will lull you to sleep.
Dine
Not ready to come out from under the water? The resort’s world-renowned Ithaa restaurant is situated five meters below sea level and boasts stunning views of the vibrant coral reefs surrounding it. Alternatively, savor the catch of the day at the open-air Sunset Grill restaurant, set on stilts 50 meters out to sea, where you can watch manta rays glide below.
Family fun
The Majaa Kids’ Club offers an array of exciting indoor and outdoor activities for the little ones, ranging from arts and crafts to snorkeling. The perfect opportunity for you to slip away to a Hatha yoga class – or sunbathe in peace and quiet.
Relax
If the placid, turquoise backdrop isn’t enough to help you unwind, book yourself in for an Elemis massage, facial or body wrap at one of the resort’s two world-class spas, both of which offer phenomenal panoramas of the resort. The signature Maldivian treatment, which includes a coconut scrub and a massage using heated coconut sticks, is as heavenly as it sounds.
