9 must-see TV shows to watch this fall

THE FIRST (HULU)
From House of Cards creator Beau Willimon, this Hulu Original follows a group of humans on their first ever trip to colonize Mars. Sean Penn leads the cast as one of five astronauts chosen for the special mission, leaving his family behind on Earth. Expect sci-fi thrills aplenty as they navigate a brave new world. September 14
SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS (FACEBOOK WATCH)
An interesting landmark for social media: this is Facebook’s very first original series for their streaming platform Facebook Watch. Elizabeth Olsen stars as a recently widowed woman, simultaneously grieving the loss of her husband and uncovering some harsh, hidden truths about his life. September 18
MANIAC (NETFLIX)
The Netflix Originals roster continues to set the small-screen bar high, and Maniac is no exception. The killer cast includes Emma Stone and Jonah Hill as guinea pigs in a pharmaceutical trial for a miracle pill that claims to cure mental illness. A psychological thriller sure to spark some serious debate. September 21
MANIFEST (NBC)
Incredible visuals and high-octane action are guaranteed in NBC’s big new action thriller of the season. After hitting a spot of turbulence, the passengers on Montego Air Flight 828 land to discover they have been missing for five years. The cast is mainly comprised of newcomers (Melissa Roxburgh and Josh Dallas take the lead) but Robert Zemeckis – director of cult classics Back to the Future, Cast Away and Forrest Gump – is on board as executive producer. September 24
THIS IS US (NBC)
Don’t pack away the tissues just yet: this record-breaking, tear-jerker of a show returns for its third season. Follow the Pearson family through the trials and tribulations of real life, with all the high drama of the last two seasons – and some award-worthy moments from Mandy Moore as matriarch Rebecca. September 25
SINGLE PARENTS (ABC)
Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester is back on primetime television in ABC’s new comedy following a group of single parents muddling through raising their kids and finding love. Elizabeth Meriwether, creator of New Girl, is the brain behind the show, so expect a feel-good, family-friendly watch. September 26
I FEEL BAD (NBC)
Amy Poehler’s new sitcom tackles the age-old issue of ‘mom guilt’. Newcomer Sarayu Blue plays a woman pulled in a million directions and left feeling like she’s failed at everything. Can women ever have it all? This show is going to tell us… October 4
THE ROMANOFFS (AMAZON STUDIOS)
Mad Men fans will rejoice at this new series from its creator Matthew Weiner. The eight-part drama follows a group of characters who believe they are direct descendants of Russian royalty. Fittingly, the ensemble cast is an assortment of Hollywood royalty, including Diane Lane, Isabelle Huppert, Aaron Eckhart, Christina Hendricks and Kathryn Hahn. October 12
THE CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA (NETFLIX)
There is already a huge cult following surrounding this show, and for good reason; based on the comic book of the same name, Kiernan Shipka (Mad Men) plays a young Sabrina the Teenage Witch, navigating the struggle between good and evil and grappling with her supernatural powers. Don’t be fooled by the name – the series is much darker than you’d expect. October 26
