What’s special about the Golden Globes?
Globes have been awarded since 1944, making 2020’s event the 77th annual ceremony. Ricky Gervais will return to host the awards for a fifth time after a four-year absence. The accolades are awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a non-profit organization made up of around 90 journalists and photographers from more than 50 countries. To be eligible, projects (the Globes cover film and television) must have been released between January 1 and December 31 of the previous year. It’s a long roll call – there are 25 categories to be won. Taking place at the Beverly Hilton hotel on Sunday, January 5, it’s considered a telling precursor to the Oscars.
Who have been the most prolific winners in the past?
Her Unofficial Majesty, Meryl Streep, has a bookcase creaking with Golden Globes – nine in total – with one of them an honorary allocation of the Cecil B. DeMille Award. Barbra Streisand can also claim nine, of which five are honorary, plus wins for non-acting achievements: producing 1976’s A Star is Born and composing the song Love Theme from the same movie, and her Best Director win for Yentl – to date, she is still the only woman to have won in this category.
Other prolific collectors include Shirley MacLaine (seven), Angela Lansbury (six) and Jessica Lange (five), while four actresses have won two acting awards in the same year: Sigourney Weaver (Gorillas in the Mist; Working Girl); Joan Plowright (Enchanted April; Stalin); Helen Mirren (The Queen; Elizabeth I); and Kate Winslet (Revolutionary Road; The Reader).
Who are the previous red-carpet winners?
Earlier this year, the red carpet returned to rainbow colors after 2018, when actors wore black in support of the #MeToo movement. Lady Gaga stole the show in a bespoke Valentino gown in periwinkle blue, while Claire Foy opted for a yellow silk Miu Miu gown with silver starbursts and a Time’s Up wristband. Timothée Chalamet’s unusual statement bib by Louis Vuitton set the internet alight.
In the preceding 74 outings, memorable looks have included Jennifer Lopez in yellow Giambattista Valli, 2016; Lupita Nyong’o’s scarlet Ralph Lauren in 2014; Keira Knightley’s 2006 white Valentino outing; Julia Roberts in an oversized men’s Armani suit, 1990; Julie Andrews’ super-simple white long-sleeved dress, 1966; Marilyn Monroe’s sparkling black halterneck dress in 1962; and Anita Ekberg in her strapless white lace gown with elbow-length gloves, 1956.
Who were the Golden Globe 2020 contenders?
Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) looks like the man to beat for Best Actor (Drama), but the Best Actress category is a wider field. Will Renée Zellweger’s star turn in Judy upstage Cynthia Erivo in the abolitionist biopic Harriet, Saoirse Ronan in Little Women or Charlize Theron in the sexual-harassment investigation Bombshell?
In the Best Picture (Drama) race, Joker looks less of a cert next to the Martin Scorsese juggernaut The Irishman, Sam Mendes’ 1917 and Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, which also scored nominations for Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver and Laura Dern.
On the small screen, Jennifer Aniston gets a Best Actress (Drama) nod for The Morning Show. Can she beat Big Little Lies co-stars Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon to win her first Globe since her Friends triumph in 2003? Or will HRH Olivia Colman follow in the block heels of her predecessor Claire Foy, who won in 2017 for The Crown?
Another television category that’s difficult to call is Best Actress (Musical/Comedy). Will Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll) trounce 2019 Emmy winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who’s nominated for Fleabag, alongside her “hot priest” co-star Andrew Scott, or could Kirsten Dunst score big for her ’90s comedy, On Becoming a God in Central Florida? All will be revealed on January 5.
