Golden Globes 2020: Best Dressed

Styled by Miranda Almond, The Crown and Fleabag star Olivia Colman flew the flag for British fashion and looked suitably regal in a scarlet gown by Emilia Wickstead.

Winner of Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy, Fleabag star and Renaissance woman Phoebe Waller-Bridge dazzled in a Ralph & Russo statement suit, which she pledged to sell after the event and donate all the proceeds to charities supporting the bushfire relief efforts in Australia.

Celebrating yet another stellar award season, actor Margot Robbie – nominated for her supporting role in Bombshell – dazzled in a decidedly modern gown by Chanel. Styled by Kate Young, she finished her beaded gown with barely-there makeup and loosely tousled hair.

Big Little Lies actor Zoë Kravitz is renowned for her standout style – and this look is no exception. In collaboration with her long-term stylist Andrew Mukamal, the Saint Laurent campaign star went for a playful polka-dot gown by the storied Parisian label; from the contrasting prints to the Bardot neckline, there are a lot of things to love about this one-of-a-kind piece.

Michelle Williams might have taken home the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series, but she was also fully deserving of best-dressed guest. The Fosse/Verdon star worked with her long-time stylist Kate Young, opting for on an orange gown by Louis Vuitton.

One of the numerous stars wearing red at this year’s event, Hollywood queen Nicole Kidman – and her stylist Julia von Boehm – opted for a simple yet standout strapless gown by Versace with an elegant train and thigh-high slit. Flawless.

Styled by Jason Bolden, Harriet star and Best Actress nominee Cynthia Erivo stunned in a sequined monochrome gown designed by Thom Browne; the show-stopping dress featured sparkling peonies – Erivo’s favorite flower – and took over 800 hours to complete. The perfect finishing touch? A $3 million Bulgari necklace.

It’s been a seminal year for actor Laura Dern, who starred in Little Women and Big Little Lies – not to mention scooping the Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe for her role in Marriage Story. Styled by Cristina Ehrlich, she collected her gong in a floor-skimming, printed Saint Laurent gown, and offset her ’70s-inspired look with loose waves.

Styled by Martha Ward, actor Gillian Anderson – who returns to TV screens this year in both Sex Education and The Crown – glowed in an elegant ivory gown by London-based brand Safiyaa, complete with an asymmetric cape detail and finished with white diamonds and a Valextra clutch.

Styled by Leslie Fremar, Bombshell leading lady and Best Actress nominee Charlize Theron looked regal in a distinctive two-tone gown by Dior, finished with a coordinating diamond and emerald necklace by Tiffany & Co.

A perfect demonstration of how to wear print on the red carpet, Booksmart star Kaitlyn Dever – styled by Karla Welch – opted for a statement puff-sleeve gown by Valentino Haute Couture.

Booksmart star and Best Actress nominee Beanie Feldstein took tonal dressing to a whole new level with her scene-stealing navy ensemble. Styled by Erin Walsh, she paired her metallic Oscar de la Renta gown with a plaited headband and floral earrings for a fun yet refined look.

Never one to shy away from taking a fashion risk on the red carpet (especially when working with her long-time stylist Elizabeth Saltzman), Gwyneth Paltrow looked ethereal in a sheer tiered gown by Fendi and statement diamond jewelry by Bulgari. Wearing the necklace under her dress was the perfect finishing touch.

From the plunging neckline to the super-sized bow and train, Marriage Story star and Best Actress nominee Scarlett Johansson stunned in her Vera Wang couture gown. Stylist Molly Dickson elevated the look even further with a liberal dusting of Bulgari diamonds.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood leading man and bona fide Hollywood legend Leonardo DiCaprio stuck to a tried-and-tested formula, pairing a classic Giorgio Armani tuxedo with patent brogues.

Since she started working with celebrity stylist Kate Young, Sienna Miller has become one of Hollywood’s best-dressed stars; the actor continued her golden streak with a directional Gucci gown for this year’s Golden Globe Awards ceremony.

Styled by Ryan Hastings, it should come as no surprise that Givenchy campaign star and actor Rooney Mara turned to the Parisian fashion house for a flawless red-carpet dress. An embellished headpiece put a celestial spin on the gothic gown to stunning effect.

Styled by Samantha McMillen, perennial fashion icon Michelle Pfeiffer was the picture of elegant simplicity in a shimmering black dress by Brunello Cucinelli with a sheer tulle skirt, finished with pared-back hair and makeup.

Actor Rachel Weisz worked with in-demand stylist Kate Young on this faultless ensemble. Known for her pared-back aesthetic, Weisz was the picture of elegance in a velvet Tom Ford gown and Harry Winston jewels.

Styled by Elizabeth Saltzman, Hollywood luminary Saoirse Ronan – nominated for her faultless performance in Little Women – put a modern spin on traditional eveningwear in this sparkly yet understated dress by Celine.

Presenter of one of the night’s award categories, actor Kerry Washington, and her stylist Law Roach, deserve their own award nod for this daring ensemble: a deconstructed Altuzarra evening dress with Magda Butrym shoes and jewelry by LA-based label Marli. The result? A jaw-dropping red-carpet look.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette star and Best Actress nominee Cate Blanchett is well versed in the art of red-carpet dressing – but this Mary Katrantzou gown took her evening style to another level. Styled by Elizabeth Stewart, she finished the embellished yellow gown with a chic up-do, Pomellato jewels and Stuart Weitzman platforms.

The Swiss-born American actor and model stunned in a cutaway red dress by Lebanese designer Georges Hobeika and Lorraine Schwartz diamond jewelry.

Hands down one of Hollywood’s coolest couples, actors Lisa Bonet and Jason Momoa brought their signature brand of modern bohemia to the red carpet in the form of a graphic gown by Fendi (Bonet worked with stylist Jeanne Yang) and sumptuous velvet blazer – perfection.

Styled by Leith Clark, British actor Gugu Mbatha-Raw went for gold in a plunging sequined Gucci gown, finished with simple black sandals.

Styled by Liat Baruch, Best Actress nominee Kirsten Dunst put unbridled romance back in the agenda in a custom gown by LA-based label Rodarte. From the sugary pink hue to the ruffles and flower details, Dunst’s dress was as pretty as it was impactful.

Not content with winning the Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama for her career-defining performance in Judy, Renée Zellweger provided a masterclass in modern minimalism – with a little help from her stylist Petra Flannery – in this faultless Armani Privé gown.

For her first Golden Globes ceremony, The Farewell star and Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture winner worked with stylist Erica Cloud to choose this suitably singular outfit by Dior. The floor-skimming slip skirt, billowing blouse and precision-cut blazer is an utterly fresh proposition.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas and her long-term stylist Mimi Cuttrell channeled Hollywood’s halcyon days in an elegantly draped pink gown by New York-based brand Cristina Ottaviano.

Never knowingly underdressed, Jennifer Lopez and her stylist Mariel Haenn pulled out all the stops for this year’s ceremony. The actor, who was nominated for her role in box-office sensation Hustlers, turned heads in a bow-embellished gown by Valentino Haute Couture, paired with emerald jewels courtesy of Harry Winston.

Best Actress nominee and star of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Rachel Brosnahan flew the flag for American fashion in a sultry mulberry-colored gown by Michael Kors. The sequined dress set the tone for her entire look, which was completed by diamond Forevermark earrings and dark lipstick.

Nominated for Best Actress in a Limited Series, Catherine the Great leading lady Helen Mirren proved that rules are made to be broken in this Dior gown. Mirren and her stylist Lee Harris opted for an elegant scarlet dress (previously considered to be a fashion faux pas on the red carpet), finished with Harry Winston jewels – and the result is sublime.

Villanelle, Jodie Comer’s iconic character from cult TV series Killing Eve, is renowned for her jaw-dropping style, and the Liverpudlian actor didn’t disappoint on the red carpet. Styled by Elizabeth Saltzman in an emerald-green Mary Katrantzou gown and statement earrings, she looked every inch the Hollywood goddess – a fitting outfit for a Best Actress nominee.

Proving that sometimes less really is more, The Morning Show actor and executive producer Jennifer Anniston – who was also nominated in the Best Actress in a Television Series category – looked radiant in a sculptural black gown by Dior. Stylists Nina and Clare Hallworth finished her look with a diamond necklace and beachy waves, of course.

As a loyal, long-time fan of Giorgio Armani, it was no surprise that The Loudest Voice leading lady Naomi Watts opted for a gown by the Italian fashion powerhouse – an effortlessly elegant slinky sequined number with understated accessories.

Fleabag star and Best Supporting Actor nominee Andrew Scott – a.k.a. ‘the hot priest’ – attended his first Golden Globes ceremony in a classic cream and black tuxedo by Paul Smith.

Styled by Samantha McMillen, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actor Dakota Fanning made a strong case for princess dresses – and looked truly breathtaking – in a diaphanous lilac gown by Christian Dior.

Styled by Cristina Ehrlich, the Little Women director went for old-school Hollywood glamour in a monochrome off-the-shoulder gown by Proenza Schouler, finishing her look with a scene-stealing diamond choker.

Knives Out star and Best Actress nominee Ana de Armas dazzled in a navy sequined gown by iconic couture house Schiaparelli. From the subtly cinched waist and full skirt to the diamond and sapphire jewels, this look, styled by Karla Welch, is red-carpet glamour at its finest.

Former PORTER cover star and The Politician actor Zoey Deutch gave a masterclass in modern red-carpet dressing in this voluminous yellow jumpsuit by Fendi, which stylist Elizabeth Stewart finished with high-octane jewels.

Her Unofficial Majesty, Meryl Streep, has a bookcase creaking with Golden Globes – nine in total – with one of them an honorary allocation of the Cecil B. DeMille Award. Barbra Streisand can also claim nine, of which five are honorary, plus wins for non-acting achievements: producing 1976’s A Star is Born and composing the song Love Theme from the same movie, and her Best Director win for Yentl – to date, she is still the only woman to have won in this category.

Other prolific collectors include Shirley MacLaine (seven), Angela Lansbury (six) and Jessica Lange (five), while four actresses have won two acting awards in the same year: Sigourney Weaver (Gorillas in the Mist; Working Girl); Joan Plowright (Enchanted April; Stalin); Helen Mirren (The Queen; Elizabeth I); and Kate Winslet (Revolutionary Road; The Reader).
