The SS19 Trend Report
Your indispensable guide to the biggest SS19 fashion trends and, more importantly, exactly how to wear them, starring NICOLE WARNE
50 SHADES OF BEIGE
“Beige is such a classic, timeless shade and a great neutral to start your outfit with. If you’re wearing it head to toe it can feel a bit safe, though, so layer it with a lot of jewelry, a fun pair of glasses, a pair of sneakers or a colorful pair of sandals – something that makes it modern and brings it to life. It can be a difficult color to wear if you have an olive skin tone like mine, so I try to team it with other neutrals or break it up with a vivid color; something to warm it up and provide a contrast.”
“Hair slides add a bit of youthfulness and a ’90s infusion to an outfit without looking like you’re trying too hard
”
THE SCARF PRINT
“I love the vintage feel of scarf prints and the way they immediately make people look chic. They’re so impactful if you wear them head to toe – just make sure you keep your silhouette simple. But I also love the idea of taking prints that are quite elegant and ladylike and putting them with something that’s a bit more modern and cool, like a denim jacket, to give them a bit of an edge. I would wear an amazing skirt like this with a white T-shirt or vest, gold accessories and these little kitten heels, which are really effortless.”
“I love a hint of print, especially in the form of an easy accessory like a scarf that I can style a hundred ways
”
THE SHORT SUIT
“When I see a good pair of shorts, I buy them in various colors because the perfect shape can be hard to find. They need to be high-waisted, tailored and a short length to elongate your legs; if they’re too long they can make you look a bit outdated, so find a good tailor and get them hemmed. A short suit feels like such a cool alternative to a pant suit, especially if you wear the blazer open with a white tee underneath. I’d wear mine with sneakers or a pair of elegant sandals to keep the look very refined. Or I’d wear the shorts with a romantic blouse to give them a softer finish.”
“I love a two-piece suit whether it’s long pants or shorts, because you have two pieces to style – it’s so easy to get a lot of wear for your money
”
SUMMER WHITE
“I wear a lot of white – it’s very Australian! We wear white, black and denim; that’s basically our uniform. But white for summer is perfect, especially a dress like this that’s so minimal: it’s easy to wear and makes you look very naturally bronzed. It’s the kind of super-chic piece that you’ll wear for years to come. I would wear it with sandals during the day, then add a bit of red lipstick, some platform sandals and a beautiful Loewe beach bag and be ready to go for an evening out.”
“I like to experiment with sunglasses because they completely change your overall look with minimal effort
”
SUNSET SHADES
“I don’t wear as much color as I used to but I do love it; it plays on my emotions and makes me feel younger and happier. I have a lot of bright, color-block dresses that I can just throw on for the evening or if I’m going to a wedding. A colorful suit is easy to wear because the silhouette is very classic so you don’t need to overcomplicate it – it’s a safe way to experiment with different shades. I wear a lot of tailoring and I love to wear my suits with sandals but it depends on the shape of the pants: if they’re cropped and narrow rather than wide leg, they tend to look better with a heel.”
“If you’re wearing a summery dress to work, closed-toe flat shoes will keep it chic; especially a pointed toe that really elongates your legs
”
CALIFORNIA COOL
“Australian and Californian style is very similar, they’re both laid-back and practical. Tie-dye isn’t something that I would have experimented with a few years ago but it’s so appealing right now. It’s a tricky one, though, and you can go wrong quite quickly, so it’s best to keep it simple. A bag is the easiest way to start – it can inject a bit of fun and playfulness into a black slip dress, but it’s not too trend-driven. And a T-shirt is super versatile: I love it worn with an androgynous pair of wide-legged jeans, but you could also tuck it into a high-waisted skirt and it can immediately be more feminine.”
“A leather cross-body bag will make your more casual looks feel elegant and sophisticated
