5 things to love about Richard Quinn

HRH Queen Elizabeth II sat front row next to Anna Wintour and British Fashion Council CEO Caroline Rush at Quinn’s FW18 show

Before February of this year, Richard Quinn was a little-known designer who had recently graduated from Central Saint Martins. But when none other than HRH Queen Elizabeth II made a surprise appearance on the front row of his FW18 show, the 29-year-old was catapulted to international recognition. Here’s why he deserves his place on everyone’s radar…

His fan base is seriously A-list…

Quinn dressed Amal Clooney for this year’s Met Gala in an extravagant rose-and-lily-print corset with an extra-long mullet train over sleek navy pants. A week later, Thandie Newton wore one of his strapless floral dresses for the BAFTAs. His other fans include Beyoncé and fashion favorites Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert and Adwoa Aboah.

…and includes Queen Elizabeth II

In what was probably the most talked-about moment at London Fashion Week FW18, Quinn became the first designer to be presented with the prestigious Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design by Her Majesty herself. The award, which honors emerging fashion designers who “show talent and originality, while demonstrating value to the community and/or sustainable policies”, will now be presented annually.

His designs dare to be different

Quinn’s clashing botanical prints on decadent silhouettes feel new and exciting. Expect to see a lot more of his thrillingly modern, spliced-and-diced English garden prints on couture-inspired full skirts and second-skin leggings on the red carpet and the streets in the near future.

He’s supportive of other creatives

The South London-based designer has an open-door policy on his own print studio and welcomes students and aspiring designers to share resources so that they have an affordable means to nurture their creativity.

He brings the avant-garde into the everyday

While his work is elaborate, there are some low-key pieces that will elevate your day-to-day look, too. We’ve fallen for the figure-sculpting biker jacket, the elegant ruffle-hemmed, polka-dot midi skirt and the printed turtlenecks.
