How To Style Fine Jewelry With Eveningwear

You might feel confident choosing everyday jewelry to wear, but when it comes to more glamorous affairs, it can be tricky to find the right balance between fashion and fine jewels. Here, celebrity stylist EMMA JADE MORRISON shares her most scintillating styling tips

Channel Zendaya for a chic, minimalist take, or dazzle in diamonds, like Gwyneth Paltrow and Michelle Yeoh

Should fine jewelry or fashion come first when styling an eveningwear look?

“The fashion does come first, but the jewelry is the pièce de résistance. With every dress that I try with a client, I talk about what jewelry would work best to accentuate it. For major red-carpet events, we often do a second, jewelry-focused fitting. I always have a clear vision in mind, but it’s important to see it on the body to make sure that scale, color and the overall aesthetics are harmonious. Jewelry is truly as important as hair and makeup – it’s those final touches that bring a look together.”

Are there any stalwart pieces of jewelry that you rely on for eveningwear ensembles?

“I think cocktail rings are so versatile and make such a statement. They can be worn with both minimalist and maximalist ready-to-wear outfits. I also love a gold statement bracelet.”

What are the pitfalls of styling evening attire?

“Overwhelming a simple, minimalistic look with too much jewelry. I like ensembles to be cohesive – a detailed or printed gown looks incredible with maximalist jewelry, but a simple column dress calls for a singular, perfectly selected piece.”

Do you have any rules around necklines and necklaces?

“Not at all – look at Gwyneth Paltrow’s Golden Globes look from 2020, in which she layered a stunning necklace underneath the sheer high neckline of her Fendi gown. This unconventional placement was the highlight of her look.”

Do you mix and match metals and gemstones or keep to one tone? And is it a faux pas to wear a full, matching suite of jewels?

“I love mixed metals for daywear, but for evening looks, I would only mix the metals if the pieces themselves were entirely metal – I think it looks too busy and not considered if they also feature gemstones. In terms of mixing gemstones, wearing lots of different stones can look fantastic – with the exception of combining rubies and emeralds… unless you are dressing for a Christmas party, of course! It’s definitely not a faux pas to wear a full suite of jewels, but isn’t it more interesting to break the rules and do a mix?”

The current trend for stacking jewels is prolific, but on the red carpet we don’t tend to see much layering of jewelry – why?

“Rather than stylistic, I think this is truly logistical – there is a limit to how much we can use, because it’s all borrowed (both insurance-wise and availability-wise). The pieces used on major carpets are so rare and delicate, we need to be cautious of any scratches that could occur from pieces being layered and bumped against each other.”

How do you feel about pairing watches with eveningwear?

“If they are evening-appropriate, watches can be so chic. Anna Wintour always wears the most gorgeous evening watches. No smartwatches, though, please!”
