Aerin Lauder On Her Everyday Beauty And Wellness Routine
The granddaughter of a beauty mogul and founder of her own beauty empire, AERIN LAUDER shares her pared-back approach to skincare, her love of long walks and hot baths, plus her styling hacks for hosting friends and family
I’m up by 7am…
…to feed and walk the dogs. I wash my hair at night, so it’s just a quick shower in the morning and simple makeup. I do Pilates three times a week and prefer to work out first thing. I also love to go for long strolls in Central Park – it’s the perfect way to start the day. I walk to the office and stop by Sant Ambroeus for coffee and a smoked-salmon croissant.
I layer my fragrances to make them last longer
Moisturized skin holds onto fragrance better, so I apply my perfume over body products with the same scent; it makes the fragrance richer and more long-lasting. I sometimes mix my scents, too, but I like to keep the layers light; it creates something very personalized and distinct. My favorite combination is one spray of Aerin Beauty Aegea Blossom plus two sprays of our Mediterranean Honeysuckle.
My grandmother Estée Lauder always said, “You only have one face – take care of it…”
…so I try to stay out of the sun and drink plenty of water. For facials I visit Aida Bicaj on the Upper East Side, but I don’t think you need dozens of products or a complicated, time-consuming routine to look beautiful. I keep my look very natural, with a small amount of radiance-boosting foundation, and bronzer for a sun-kissed glow.
I always have fresh flowers at home
Depending on the season, it varies between beautiful orchids, hydrangeas, roses, peonies or tuberose. I also find candles to be very uplifting, because they set the mood when entertaining and they can easily transform the feeling of a space. When pairing a candle scent with a room, I try to think about what kind of feeling I am trying to convey.
When I need to relax, I like to go for long walks surrounded by nature
Whether I am in New York and go to Central Park, or the beach in Long Island, it’s my favorite way to calm my mind after a long day. When I’m in the Hamptons, I enjoy walks along the beach or down a country road with wild flowers. I feel like there is nothing more peaceful and invigorating than a walk in the fresh air. I never listen to music; I like to take this time to just think and be inspired by my surroundings.
After a hectic day…
…a great meal with family and friends helps me to disconnect from work and reconnect with the people I love most. My favorite dinner spots in New York City include Majorelle, The Mark and 4 Charles Prime Rib. I love trying new restaurants, but I also enjoy revisiting some of my traditional favorites.
I love hosting friends and family in my home
I like to change the décor, menu and atmosphere depending on the season and location – this keeps hosting fun for me and allows me to be creative. Since I’m often inspired by nature, I tend to rely on what is local and in season to influence the color palette. For example, for a summer dinner in Long Island, I will typically incorporate a blue-and-white color palette with touches of green and floral motifs. I like to add raffia and wicker for natural touches that are light and airy, too. If I’m hosting dinner at home, I will also cut fresh flowers from my garden and add those to the tablescape.
When I travel…
..I always reapply lip balm and add a touch of bronzer before landing to make me look refreshed. The first thing I apply to my face when I get to a hotel after a long flight is a sheet mask, and I adore Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair. It goes everywhere with me when I’m traveling – I’ve used it for as long as I can remember and love the healthy glow it gives my skin.
I take long baths…
…to wind down from a busy day or after traveling. I keep a hand cream and Aerin Beauty Rose Oil by my bedside to apply when my skin is extra-dry during the winter season. I must admit I’m a horrible sleeper. I wake up multiple times during the night and sometimes scroll through Instagram. My son taught me how to use Instagram and he says he’s created a monster!
