Kate Somerville’s AM/PM routine

From being one of the first aestheticians to open an LA clinic that combined facials with medical skincare to launching her eponymous beauty range, Kate Somerville’s career has been pioneering. Here, she explains how fasting has transformed her health, why a steam room makes the best jet-lag cure and how her own battle with skin issues led to the creation of her best-selling range…

Beauty

IN THE MORNING

I grew up with eczema, so skincare is a necessity…

…rather than anything pampering, as it’s what I have to do to keep my skin in a normal state. I take a bath in the morning and evening using Epsom salts; even if I have a busy day, I’ll get up an hour earlier than usual to make time for it, as my skin needs to hydrate on a deep level. I always exfoliate twice a week, using my Kate Somerville ExfoliKate; I follow a program where I exfoliate my face on Monday, my neck, chest and arms on Tuesday and my legs on Wednesday, and then I start again with the face on Thursday so I’m always in this circle of exfoliating. Immediately after exfoliating I moisturize my skin; I use Curél [a Japanese skincare brand], as it’s kept my eczema and dry skin at bay. For my face, the DermalQuench Wrinkle Warrior from my range is super-hydrating, then I use one of my bio peptides followed by the +Retinol Vitamin C Moisturizer if my skin needs brightening, or the Goat Milk if it needs calming. I have a new DeliKate post-peel program cream with a ton of specific anti-inflammatory ingredients, which is great as my skin can get so sensitive and this calms it down.

I have to be super-careful with makeup…

…but I know what works for my skin. I’ve just discovered the By Terry Light-Expert Flawless Foundation Brush; I love this product as it’s easy to use and very moisturizing – I’ve not found anything better. I also use Nars blush and I love Hourglass concealer, mascara and its beautiful highlighters.

If I wake up looking puffy…

…I use hot and then cold water on my face – it boosts blood flow and cold water is anti-inflammatory. If traveling, I soak green tea bags and use them warm to massage my skin, alternating with teaspoons chilled from the fridge. Hot and cold is key to getting the circulation moving. At home I have a cold pool and I make myself go in the hot tub and then jump in the cold water. Cold is the best healer.

Fasting has made the biggest difference for me

I try to eat before 6pm and fast until 11am. I definitely feel better, as my body is not having to process so much food at night.

When I need more energy…

…I’ve learned to rest during the day rather than pushing through. I used to keep going, but all I did was burn out and I ended up suffering physically from it. Resting is so important and we shouldn’t feel guilty about doing it.

IN THE EVENING

If I have an event the next day…

…I use the ExfoliKate like a micro peel, applying it as a toner with a cotton pad, and leaving it on overnight – when you wake up your skin is like glass. On other evenings I use a liquid cleanser, then the DeliKate, as I really believe in omega oils for the skin, plus if I need it, retinol for under the eyes. I’ve just turned 50 but I’ve been so diligent with my skin, and while I’m losing some elasticity, I don't have wrinkles.

I don’t take supplements…

…but I do eat healthily. People take everything under the sun, but I prefer to do it with my food. I eat organically and try to make healthy choices, but I still love Mexican food – that’s my vice.

I don’t do home treatments as I have my clinic…

…where I do LED therapy – it’s one of my favorite treatment types. I also see a healer, Ray Johnson – he travels the world and I see him twice a year to ‘clear my spirit’. It all sounds very strange, but it’s been transformational for me.

When I have jet-lag…

…I go to the spa before I check in to my room. I go in the steam room or sauna for as long as I can, then I take a cold shower and then get back in the heat. I do this three times, as it invigorates and also grounds me.

I’m not a good sleeper…

…but exercise makes all the difference, as I need to exhaust myself. I worry a lot, but since reading The Untethered Soul by Michael A Singer, I do his ‘surrendering mode’, putting my hand over my third eye and my heart to stop my mind from chattering. I also have a Sleepytime CBD Roller that relaxes me.
