Claire Danes’ AM/PM routine
With numerous Emmy and Golden Globe awards under her belt, actor CLAIRE DANES is perhaps best known for her portrayal of CIA operative Carrie Mathison in Homeland. Is her beauty regime as extreme as the roles she plays? DANIELLE FOX finds out…
IN THE MORNING
I eat the same breakfast every day…
…which started when I was pregnant with my son, Rowan, and it’s stuck – I have wholewheat toast and soft-boiled eggs, with lots of butter. That’s my thing. For lunch, I usually get my greens in and have a salad of some kind. I’m impatient with supplements – somebody once told me I should take omega-3, so I did that for, like, maybe four days. But I’m bad at maintaining any of that.
I’ve been a recent convert to facial oils…
I’m religious about my exercise…
Generally, I run, but I couldn’t do it when I was pregnant, and I was introduced to SoulCycle, Barre, and then The Class By Taryn Toomey. Initially, I was a little hesitant about the ‘clubbyness’ of it, but it is nice to be in a group and to exercise with others as part of a community. Endorphins are released when you move and when you’re social. So, when you combine the two, the result is quite potent.
I have a great, but hardcore, facialist in New York…
…called Christine Chin – she is kinda mean, but she’s really good. I have whatever treatment she tells me I have to. She berates me, and it’s great.
Seeing my dermatologist regularly is non-negotiable…
…Kenneth Howe at Wexler Dermatology in NYC has been my dermatologist for forever. I’m at that age now where people are starting to talk about getting ‘work’ done, but I’ve never really been pressured by a doctor or anybody in the industry, which I’m kind of surprised by and grateful for. I’m not against any of that, but it seems a little precarious because, once you start, it may be hard to stop. Not having movement in my face isn’t going to work for me. However, after a certain point, if aging became a distraction, I would have some work done.
IN THE EVENING
I always cleanse, tone and moisturize at night…
…and I use the very occasional mask, which is always an under-eye one. I’m a privileged person who’s been fortunate enough to have a supply of products from my glam team.
My husband, Hugh [Dancy], is the cook in the family…
…I used to cook a little and then I just got outclassed and outpaced – he really knows what he’s doing. We like a roast chicken, and he does this great spatchcock. He also does roast potatoes in duck fat that are really good. He made a roast lunch the other day, with British-style Yorkshire puddings and bread sauce. It was pretty classic.
On my bedside table…
…there’s an eye mask and my iPad, which I use for reading. I’m in a book club with my oldest friends and, at the moment, we are reading The Overstory by Richard Powers.
The best piece of beauty advice I’ve been given…
…is to wash your face every night – and I do. And you have to hydrate – that’s important, too. I also like to exfoliate twice a week, at least. I think it’s good to get a deep-clean every now and again as well.
My animals keep me awake at night…
…particularly my slightly incontinent 15-year-old Schnoodle, Ouija. My dog is such a lovebug, but he’s getting old now and has a heart condition. We live in a townhouse and there are a lot of stairs, so when he’s crying at 5.30am and I have to take him up on the roof in the snow, it’s a struggle.
