5 Essential Steps For Great Skin, According To This Expert

With the onset of summer, an emphasis on bare-faced beauty returns. Here, leading oculoplastic surgeon DR. MARYAM ZAMANI tells MALENA HARBERS the products that really make a difference to how your skin looks and feels, especially when the weather warms up

Beauty

Start with an AHA cleanser

“Everybody needs a good cleanser. Most people should use a light acid cleanser as it’s good for all skin types, except sensitive – a cream formula, such as my new MZ Skin Calming Cream Cleanser, is better in this case. If you are using an exfoliating cleanser, the one mistake people make is being too aggressive with it. You should never use an acid cleanser twice a day – once is enough, and it can be either in the morning or evening. My MZ Skin Cleanse & Clarify AHA Cleanser & Mask is mild enough to use daily. Twice a week, I leave it on as a mask for a deeper cleanse. I exercise a lot and I’m always running around doing a million things, so this feels like I’m getting rid of everything that’s sitting on top of my skin.”

Tailor your serums

“When it comes to serums, they should be targeted for your specific skin concerns. For instance, anyone who wants pro-aging benefits should use the MZ Skin Reviving Bio-Placenta and Stem Cell Serum. If you want skin brightening or if you suffer from pigmentation like me, you’ll want to use a vitamin C serum. If you have rosacea or redness, look for a calming serum, and if acne is your concern, you should use a hyaluronic acid or antioxidant serum that gives hydration – with acne, you still need hydration but it should be lightweight in texture, not rich.”

Maximize skin repair at night

“When you’re sleeping, your skin cells are focused on renewing and repairing, so it’s the ideal time to use a product that enhances this process. My MZ Skin Reviving Bio-Placenta and Stem Cell Serum is essentially sleep in a bottle [now in a supersized 50ml version exclusive to NET-A-PORTER]. The bio-mimetic placenta within it uses liposomal technology, which means it mimics our skin cells, allowing it to penetrate better and deliver better results. There’s also a blend of peptides (called tripeptides), which works like a retinoic acid to build collagen and elastin for smoother skin, stem cells for firming and brightening, algae to help decrease fine lines and wrinkles and a mix of significant hydrators – hyaluronic acid, glycerine, squalene and ceramides, which also support the skin barrier. Use it on your face, neck and décolleté every evening, plus you can use it in the morning, too – it’s not heavy or greasy, just nourishing and cocooning. If you have an oilier skin type, it doubles as a moisturizer because it provides enough hydration.”

Use the right eye cream

“Not all eyes are created equal. If you have thin, dehydrated skin or dark circles, look for eye creams with peptides and ceramides to increase skin density and niacinamide and caffeine for dark circles. If you’re generally puffy under the eyes, using these same ingredients will make your eyes look even puffier. Instead, you want ingredients that drain and detoxify. My MZ Skin Depuff & Define Contouring Eye Rescue includes smoothers and hydrators that aren’t meant to hold onto water in the same way that these other ingredients will.”

Lock in actives with a moisturizer

“A good moisturizer shouldn’t be forgotten. It’s an all-round good skin essential that helps with pro-aging, so it should be chock full of the things that will build collagen and lock in hydration. Whereas the same serum is not a one-size-fits-all product, the opposite is true with a moisturizer – the same one can work for all different skin types. That said, if I need an extra ‘zhuzh’, I’ll use a rich moisturizer both morning and night, but generally, in the summer, I use a lightweight cream or gel formula both in the evening and in the day. And don’t forget – an SPF applied over your moisturizer in the morning is a non-negotiable any time of year.”
