Mary Phillips On The Skincare, Makeup and Wellness Hacks She Swears By

She’s the makeup artist who made the underpainting contouring technique a TikTok sensation and is the go-to face painter for Hollywood’s It-girls (Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner among them). Here, MARY PHILLIPS speaks to MALENA HARBERS about the hero products she includes in her own day-to-night routine, the true power of concealer – when applied correctly – and how she finds headspace amidst a demanding schedule

The first thing I do when I wake up…

…is drink a big glass of water to start my day off hydrated. I then love to make a coffee, whether it’s an espresso or a vanilla oat-milk latte.

My morning skincare routine is full of hydrating products

Some of my favorites are Lancôme Advanced Génifique Youth Activating Concentrate, La Mer’s Crème de la Mer and Augustinus Bader’s The Eye Cream. Once I’ve applied my products, I like to use a tool to aid circulation, lymphatic drainage and to help the ingredients penetrate. This ensures my skin will receive the maximum benefits of the products while creating a more youthful, lifted, healthy complexion, and I find it also relieves any tension and puffiness. I always finish with a broad-spectrum to protect me throughout the day; I love the Elta MD UV Daily Tinted Face Sunscreen.

When it comes to my hair…

…I use Ouai’s Medium Hair Shampoo and Conditioner. Once I get out of the shower, I then use a leave-in conditioner to protect my hair before any styling. My typical go-to on work days is to only blow-dry my bangs and leave the rest to air-dry to prevent heat damage. I like my hair off my face while I’m working, so I always pin it back or wear a pony. I use the K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask twice a week to repair and smooth my hair – it feels amazing afterwards.

My ultimate hero product is…

Beauty’s Lip Definer No 02 pencil. It’s my favorite nude lip product, and applies so easily. It looks great on so many skin tones, too – I use it on myself and my clients. I’ll typically apply it in several ways: to overline or to fill in the whole lip. Sometimes, I use it just as a contour around the lip first and then I apply another lip-liner color to darken it.

Taking care of your skin is the best thing you can do for yourself

Whether you prefer or treatments, everyone’s skin is different, so whatever works for you is best. I love getting PRP treatments by Dr. Jason Diamond (based in LA). I always feel so fresh and renewed afterwards.

On a ‘bad’ face day, concealer is my best friend

The best way to cover up any imperfections is with a and I love to use Lancôme’s Teint Idole with a really tiny brush. How I use it depends on the look I’m going for. I put concealer underneath and blend the foundation into it when I’m doing a quick look, or if I want my skin to look lightweight. However, I use the concealer on top of foundation when I want more coverage; and when I want to do a very natural-makeup look, I’ll use just a small amount of concealer on bare skin, where I see discoloration or blemishes. This technique is best when you want that look.

I love a beauty device

I’m currently using Shani Darden’s Skincare Facial Sculpting wand – it feels like a face massage and my clients love it, too.

If I’m working on a major shoot, I try to do more inner work

I often the day before a shoot – and sometimes the morning of the shoot, too. It calms my nerves and gets my head in the right space before a crazy day of work.

In the evening…

…I start my by taking my eye makeup off with a dedicated eye-makeup remover. Then I use La Mer’s Cleansing Micellar Water on a cotton round to remove face makeup, followed by Augustinus Bader’s The Foaming Cleanser to make sure my skin is super-clean. To hydrate, I apply Lancôme Génifique serum and layer Augustinus Bader’s The Cream on top. Then I massage La Mer’s The Eye Concentrate under my eyes and on my brow bone. I also love taking baths. I use Epsom salts and essential oils to help with inflammation and relaxation. I love Ouai’s Melrose Place gentle Body Cleanser, too – it smells so good and leaves my skin incredibly soft.

Over the years, I’ve tried so many dieting fads…

…such as fasting in the morning and keto. But I find it easiest to create a healthy lifestyle rather than dieting. I always try to but, if I’m traveling, I don’t hold back from enjoying local specialties. It’s all about balance.

Believe in yourself

The best advice I have been given is that you have to believe that you are worthy enough to be in a room with so many talented people – because if you don’t have confidence in yourself, no one else will.

On working out

My workout of choice is The Tracy Anderson Method, as well as working out with my trainer Jenn Glysson. I always feel amazing after both. The former also means that, when I’m traveling, I can still take a Tracy Anderson class online.

Making time for myself has improved my lifestyle tremendously

I always was, and still am, very committed to my work. But now – more than ever – I make time to do the things I love, like working out, being around the people I love and pampering myself on my days off, whether that’s with a great massage or a facial. My body always feels exceptionally better after a hot-yoga class, so I would definitely consider that as pampering myself as well.
