7 lessons in style from Queen Elizabeth II
The British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, has been delivering an unflinching masterclass in how to dress properly for every possible occasion all throughout her 66-year reign. And while you may not be into head-to-toe magenta, there are some very useful lessons to be learned here. By BRIONY WHITEHOUSE
Embrace color
Perhaps the defining feature of the Queen’s style is her love of bright, bold colors – all the better to help spot her in a crowd. Apparently, she once explained: “If I were to wear beige, no one would know who I am.” We’re convinced she’d approve of SS18’s one-hue-head-to-toe trend.
Be prepared for all style eventualities
When traveling, members of the royal family must always have an all-black outfit with them in case of an unexpected death. While we’re not all similarly duty-bound, there’s something to be said for always keeping a chic, go-anywhere LBD on hand.
Find your crowning glory
Although the tradition of precluding women from showing their hair in public stems from old-fashioned etiquette, the Queen has made a statement hat her signature piece (at least until 6pm, when the tiaras come out). Find whatever it is that makes your look yours, and wear it as though it’s the crown jewels.
What you carry counts
Her Majesty’s Launer bag is loaded with messages: putting it on the table indicates to her aides that she would like to leave dinner; moving it from her left hand to the right signals that she wishes to exit a conversation; and clasping it spares her from having to shake hands. While your own handbag may not convey a secret code, it’s true that the bag you carry – and how you wear it – can make a good outfit great. And of course it can always act as a defense weapon, should you need it – particularly if it’s studded.
Be aware of what your style says
The Queen’s outfit must always be appropriate for the occasion, and must never send ambiguous or politically loaded messages. While most of us don’t need to worry about offending any foreign dignitaries, it’s a good idea to consider the occasion, and be mindful of what your look says about who you are, or who you want to be.
Find your signature style
Despite fashion’s ever-evolving trends, Her Majesty’s look has barely changed. While we encourage a little experimentation, finding what works for you and sticking with it, regardless of trends, is a sure-fire route to chic.
Elegance, always
Grunge, normcore, and barely there hemlines may come and go, but there’s something to be said for the enduring elegance of sophisticated style. Take your cue from the monarch and prioritize good grooming and classic wardrobe staples. It’s hard to put a (sensibly heeled) foot wrong when your lipstick is on point…
