It’s no secret that jeans are an essential in every wardrobe arsenal. Ascending from humble origins as utilitarian workwear in the USA in the 1870s, they’ve become one of the fundamental backbones of smart-casual style, thanks to their easy-wear appeal and their ability to dress up or dress down any outfit in an instant – from breezy floral blouses to crisp, tailored blazers. There’s no better piece to telegraph the mood of the season, either – a wide-legged stonewash style will channel a 1990s air, while a slim-legged design denotes a more classic, preppy feel.

So, how best to encapsulate this season’s smart-yet-casual aesthetic? Simple: a pair of flared jeans. More tailored than a baggy silhouette, but more relaxed than a high-waisted style, flared jeans are an ideal choice as our diaries begin to fill with social occasions.

New York label Nili Lotan’s ‘Florence’ jean feels distinctly bohemian, with a distressed mid-blue wash and patch pockets that are undeniably timeless – pair with simple tank tops and suede jackets for an urban take on prairie dressing.

Want to make a statement? Gucci’s wide-legged flares feature an appliqué logo patch emblazoned with the slogan ‘Quelle qu’en soit la saison’ or ‘Whatever the season’ – an apt message for such a timeless staple. Wear with a cotton T-shirt or switch it up for a fitted turtleneck when the temperature starts to drop; a belt cinched around the high waistline will add an air of polish.

Trust cult Los Angeles denim label Frame to subvert the jean entirely, however. Taking inspiration from the freewheeling 1970s, the brand has added a slashed-front hemline to its ‘Le Mini Boot’ jean, making it the perfect cut for showing off evening sandals. Just add a spaghetti-strap tank and a grab a minimalist bag for a look that can take you from brunch to bar in an instant.
