Carolyn Murphy’s Everyday Beauty, Health And Wellness Secrets
Supermodel and environmental advocate CAROLYN MURPHY shares her makeup trick for tired eyes, the skin serum she’s been using for almost 30 years, and why she loves an infrared sauna
The first thing I do when I wake up is…
…give thanks for opening my eyes. Then I let the dogs out and make some green tea. If I’m lucky, I can take a few minutes, sit quietly in the sunshine and meditate, but I’m not dogmatic in my routine. One thing I do adhere to is that I keep my phone in the kitchen, never my bedroom, and I try to wait at least 45 minutes before looking at it – it’s difficult, but savoring the morning quietude is a luxury.
In the morning, I don’t wash my face
I just splash it with cold water, then use Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair serum. I cannot live without it; it’s magic in a bottle. I’ve used it since 1996, morning and night. I swear it has slowed the signs of aging and has been the key to my skin looking hydrated and luminescent. Afterwards, I use Estée Lauder’s Re-Nutriv Ultimate Diamond Sculpted Transformation Crème and Perfectionist Pro Multi-Defense Aqua UV Gel SPF50. If I feel puffy, I use a face roller that I keep in the fridge to help with de-puffing..
When my skin is dehydrated…
…I try to drink an ungodly amount of water every day, and I take plant-based omegas and liposomal vitamin C, which helps from the inside out. I sleep with a Vitruvi humidifier next to my bed, too, since it puts moisture into the air. Sometimes, I use the Estée Lauder Re-Nutriv Ultimate Diamond Mask Noir – I swear if I’m diligent about these hacks, it takes 10 years off my face!
Hormonal acne is very real
Perimenopause is a culprit [for me] as of late. I use an infrared sauna mat, which helps detoxify the body and skin, our largest organ. An industry secret is the Clinique Three Step skincare routine – in particular the Clarifying Lotion. I’ve used it since I was a teenager and swear it helps to clarify and reset the skin.
I like to keep my everyday makeup pretty simple when I’m not working
I love using a dab of Estée Lauder’s Futurist Soft Touch Brightening Skincealer concealer on imperfections, and a sweep of Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess Powder Bronzer on my cheeks and eyelids, just to give a fresh, sun-kissed look.
I’ve had my share of ‘bad’ face days
I actually have curly brown hair
I color my hair blonde, so I use a gentle cleanser like Christophe Robin’s Cleansing Mask With Lemon, and I use Blu & Green’s Weekly Repair Mask to hydrate and combat damage. Silk hair towels, pillowcases and scrunchies are a must, too.
Being introduced to transcendental meditation was transformative for me
It’s a restorative and daily dedication. I also attribute my inner growth emotionally and spiritually to [energy healer] Aleta St. James. She’s a force when it comes to releasing any traumas or negative patterns by using chakra balancing and breath work.
I love the evening ritual of taking a bath
I’ve done it my whole life. I put a few drops of Estée Lauder’s Youth-Dew perfume in the water, as there’s so much nostalgia for me around the scent – my nana used it. It’s also really sexy – men love it! For morning, in my shower, I keep fresh-cut eucalyptus from my yard, and I’m big on using exfoliating mitts with an ultra-moisturizing body wash.
My nighttime routine is all about layering nourishing products that hydrate.
I cleanse my skin with Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Cleansing Balm; it helps remove sunblock and makeup. Then I use the Ultimate Lift Regenerating Youth Treatment Lotion, followed by Advanced Night Repair and the Ultimate Lift Regenerating Youth Serum. Next, I apply the Eye Crème from the same range, sealing everything in with Re-Nutriv Ultimate Diamond Sculpted Transformation Crème. For the body, I love an overnight treatment with an alpha hydroxy or retinol.
I am always looking for ways to make my beauty routine more sustainable.
I try to avoid anything single-use or disposable, and instead opt for things like reusable cotton rounds, choosing products that come in minimal packaging and are refillable, and being mindful of the amount of water I’m using.
I make time to move my body every day.…
…even if it’s just for 20 minutes. I’m not a hardcore-gym kind of gal; I prefer gentle movement like Pilates or doing something outdoors, such as hiking or going on long walks with my girlfriends. I really love swimming laps, doing the rebounder and lightweight-strength reps for body conditioning.
I’ve followed a plant-based diet most of my life
We always had gardens at home and I was raised to eat that way. This means the bulk of the food I eat is fruit and vegetables. It makes me feel good. I don’t ascribe to diets or fads or being too stringent. I listen to my body – even when I want the ‘bad’ stuff, I allow it. I get pickier when it comes to the source, so I try to buy organic, and I like to know my farmers, which is why I like farmers’ markets.
My go-to party look is…
…a red lip, hair slicked back, a little black dress, chandelier earrings and a great kitten-heel shoe.
I’m not a big consumer
My lifestyle has always been led by my reverence for nature. I live minimally and believe in quality versus quantity. My homes are small and usually historic, I’ve had the same car since 2012, I have a very edited and timeless wardrobe (which shocks people), and I do little things every day (see my stories on Instagram). I humbly work with foundations that support nutrition through connection in growing food, supporting farmers, protecting our oceans, marine and wildlife. I also accept that I’m not, and nor is anyone, perfect. I believe education is key – starting small and locally within your community is everything.
