Marianna Hewitt’s AM/PM routine
A WWD Influencer of the Year and co-founder of Summer Fridays, entrepreneur MARIANNA HEWITT shares her approach to intuitive eating, her Sunday-evening beauty regimen and how she gets a great night’s sleep
IN THE MORNING
The first thing I do…
…is look at my phone. It’s such a bad habit, I know, but I roll over, check my phone and then scroll through Instagram. Then I have a glass of water, followed by a matcha or coffee. The silver lining of recent times, having lived a jet-lag life for so long, is that I now actually have a morning routine and it’s really nice to have that time.
My skin regimen starts with…
…Summer Fridays’ gel cleanser, then the CC Me Serum – it’s really hydrating, and it looks so great on the skin. I use our Jet Lag Mask, but in a thin layer, as a moisturizer. And I wear SPF 30 or 50 every single day – usually Supergoop! Play Everyday Lotion SPF50 – and if I’m not wearing makeup, I’ll reapply it throughout the day.
I love a no-makeup makeup look…
…but I do wear a bit more for Zoom calls. Armani’s Neo Nude base is beautiful and very sheer, and I love Nars’ Radiant Creamy Concealer – I wear it every single day, as it looks great on my skin. Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes Mascara is amazing, and I use her eyeliners, too. I love Victoria Beckham Beauty’s Bitten Lip Tint – it’s not quite glossy, not quite matte, and gives a gorgeous wash of color; I also use it on my cheeks.
I dry-brush my body twice a day
I use Dr. Barbara Sturm’s body brush: in the morning, it wakes up my skin, while at night it feels like I’m brushing the day off. I also love her Anti-aging Body Cream – I used to use just a basic moisturizer, but now I like something with extra skincare benefits, and I also use the Costa Brazil body oil.
I work with a functional medicine expert
He’s called Dr. Will Cole, and I have been tested for what I should be taking, so now I take the Moon Juice SuperYou powder, plus magnesium before bed.
On a bad-face day…
…I use my ice face roller, as it feels so depuffing, and our Jet Lag Mask – in fact, this is where the idea came from for a mask to use when you feel exhausted. I keep it in the refrigerator, as the aluminium tube keeps it cool, so it depuffs, as well as hydrating and moisturizing.
To cope with jet-lag…
…I get into the time zone of where I’m going, either the day before or on the day of travel. I never nap when I arrive, and I try to sync to the local sunrise and sunset as soon as possible. It helps to drink water, go for a walk, stay active and get your body moving.
I love using fitness apps
Before the pandemic, my Pilates teacher, Pilates by Amanda, was totally booked up and it was difficult to book in to one of her classes, but now she has opened up online, she has people coming in from all over the world. It’s a really tough workout.
I fast till midday
I just drink coffee, water or matcha till lunchtime. I also love The Intuitive Eating Workbook by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch – people try so many diets, but they don’t listen to their bodies. This is not a diet; it’s a lifestyle, and you listen to your hunger cues, so you eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full.
The best advice I’ve ever been given…
…is not to be afraid of being told no. I don’t remember who said this, but so many of us don’t like to ask for something in case the response is ‘no’, but I try to live without that fear of rejection. If someone says no, fine, but who knows the opportunities that can open up if they say yes? Sometimes, the most successful people – such as IT Cosmetics founder Jamie Lima and hairdresser Jen Atkin – are the most open and supportive.
IN THE EVENING
Sunday night is my prep night…
…when I do those extra things that make me feel ready for the week ahead. I like to set myself up to have the best week ahead, and as I work from home, my self-care is also about being clutter-free. I have a nice long evening routine; I take a relaxing bath and use our R+R Mask – it’s great for this time of year, as it’s more of a face-oil-meets-serum and it leaves the skin really soft, plus it smells so good.
For my hair…
California is very laid-back
It’s pretty much the same look for day to night, so I like to go for quality pieces that transition from work to evening. I love a great pair of denims with heels that can take me everywhere. I always feel ‘ready’ when I’m wearing concealer, mascara, eyeliner and lipstick, and I’ll refresh my hair with a Byredo hair fragrance or a dry shampoo.
I go to Shani Darden for facials
My evening skincare…
…starts with our Summer Fridays’ Super Amino Gel Cleanser, and then I use our Soft Reset one night and Shani Darden’s Retinol Reform the next. I use our Jet Lag Mask overnight, and I also love an oil, so either I mix one in or layer it on. I’ve just started using Augustinus Bader’s The Face Oil, and I’ve always used La Mer’s The Renewal Oil – I use a little of it with foundation during the day.
I like to wind down before bed
I have red lights (that I buy online) in the bedroom, so I turn those on, and I have a blue-light screen blocker on my phone, too. I take magnesium about 30 minutes before bed, as it really helps me to relax, and I put in ear plugs and use the Slip eye mask because, if not, my eyes stay open and alert, so it really helps me get to sleep.
On my bedside table you’ll find…
…a sleep spray – it’s like a ritual for me – Summer Fridays’ Lip Butter Balm, as it’s a great overnight lip treatment, and my Slip eye mask.
