The fashion report: Met Gala 2018
Rihanna, Maison Margiela: Co-host for the evening and never one to shy away from the avant garde, Rihanna didn’t disappoint in Maison Margiela.
Solange Knowles, Iris van Herpen: Fiercely fabulous in Iris van Herpen. If it’s been tried before, Solange isn’t interested. Her motto? If ain’t broke, shatter it.
Just to be clear, there were many women at the Met Gala last night who looked beautiful. Whose dresses were flattering, whose hair flowed and whose bodies were indeed heavenly. But to our minds, when there’s a theme involved, the best dressed will always be those who embrace it, who stand out for their creativity, their risk taking, their commitment. Herewith are our favorites, who was yours?
Zendaya, Versace: Zendaya gave us all the Joan of Arc vibes in the best possible way in this custom Versace number. From the blunt-fringed wig to the steel-gray hue, this is attention to detail and fashion drama on a spectacular scale.
Lily Collins, Givenchy Haute Couture: This is the first time we’ve seen our two-time cover star like this, and we most definitely approve. In its essence, this Givenchy look is pretty wearable, but the hairpiece, Cartier jewels and makeup – that solitary red tear! – take it up a level or 20.
Diane Kruger, Prabal Gurung: She had us at the veil. Our first look at Kruger’s outfit was cropped at the neck, but it was enough for us. Add Prabal Gurung’s blue train and she takes us to cloud nine, which is pretty close to heaven after all.
Jennifer Lopez, Balmain: If you need another reason to admire J. Lo’s dress, how about the fact that all of last night’s specially created Balmain designs will be auctioned off to raise money for the charity (RED)? Good work in more ways than one.
Donatella Versace, Versace: There are few people more committed to fashion and this look is no exception for designer Donatella, who also created some of the most exquisite gowns of the night. We saw long skirts over pants or shorter dresses a few times last night (including Amal Clooney’s Richard Quinn outfit), but this was the only time we saw one reveal matching encrusted boots.
Priyanka Chopra, Ralph Lauren: A simple Ralph Lauren column dress in blood-red velvet, then boom, an intricate gold hood sits atop that beautifully modest hair. Stunning.
Evan Rachel Wood, Altuzarra: Just incredible. We’re guessing this Joseph Altuzarra gown was a heavy piece to wear all night, but if anyone’s strong enough to bear it, it’s Evan Rachel Wood. The simple mid-parting and pared-back makeup amplify the angelic qualities of the look.
Zoe Kravitz, Saint Laurent: Temptation is the key ecclesiastical theme at play here in Kravitz’s daring Saint Laurent dress. Irresistible.
Kate Bosworth, Oscar de la Renta: If it looks as though Kate Bosworth might be the virgin sacrifice of the night, we think that’s what she and Oscar de la Renta designers Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia were going for. It really works. Worthy of worship.
Lana Del Rey, Gucci: Wings, daggers, hearts: what’s not to love about Lana del Rey’s Gucci number? Extra points for accessorizing with the label’s designer Alessandro Michele and Gucci guy Jared Leto.
Rooney Mara, Givenchy: The slightly severe Puritan tones of this Givenchy dress suit the uber-cool Rooney Mara to perfection.
Greta Gerwig, The Row: We love the way director Greta Gerwig paid no heed to typical red-carpet allure when picking this design by The Row. Genius.
Madonna, Jean Paul Gaultier: No one could ever accuse Madonna of not committing to a look. This was her second outfit of the night, after walking the red carpet in archive Louis Vuitton. If the dress looks reminiscent of her famous Jean Paul Gaultier corset, that’s because the designer (who was also her date for the night) created it specially for her. And when it comes to religious symbolism in fashion and art, Madonna has definitely been there, and worn the rosaries.
