Lauren Napier’s AM/PM routine
Makeup artist to the stars and founder of her eponymous skincare brand, LAUREN NAPIER shares the secret to getting a lasting glow – and the post-shower tip that transformed her skin
IN THE MORNING
As soon as I wake up…
…I grab my phone. It’s sad, but we all want to make sure the world is still spinning! Then I do my morning stretches and breathing exercises; they prepare me for the day and keep me centered and calm – and the more relaxed I am, the fewer lines on my face.
My routine starts in the shower
I use the Goop Clarifying Exfoliator once a week, as it keeps my skin very bright and fresh. I also like to massage my face a lot, and I use Epara Intense Hydrating Mask to really hydrate my skin, while I’m steaming my body in the shower. Once out of the shower, I mix some of the Rose MD Skin Signature Moisturizer with the Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum – again, to get maximum hydration into my skin. I love using this serum in the cold winter months, plus, when I apply foundation and concealer on top, it makes them look beautifully lightweight and sheer. It keeps the skin glowing and that’s always a youthful look, especially on Zoom calls. I use Nars Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation – it’s beautiful. And then I apply Westman Atelier Vital Skin Foundation Stick, but as a concealer, below my eyes. Surratt Beauty Mascara is one of my absolute favorites, and the Victoria Beckham Beauty Posh Lipstick Trio Set is quite beautiful for that effortless ‘I’m at home relaxing but still look amazing’ look. For blush, I love Charlotte Tilbury’s Cheek to Chic Swish & Go Blusher. I have natural hair from root to tip, and so, for styling, I use Oribe Imperméable Anti Humidity Spray and Balmain Paris Hair Couture Silk Hair Perfume.
For my body…
…I do a scrub every two days in the shower and then follow with the Liha Idan Oil. I use it on wet skin and then just pat myself dry – and I’ve never had such soft skin. I always now pat my skin dry with the towel; I don’t rub it, as I don’t think pulling the skin downwards every day as you dry it is a good thing.
On those mornings when I feel tired…
…I drink lots of water to stimulate the organs. The skin is our largest organ and it reflects how the rest of our body is doing – so when it looks sallow and sad, I drink lots of water and use the Natura Bissé Diamond Extreme Mask, which tightens up the skin like a facelift in a tube.
My antidote to jet lag…
…is to take a big green juice whenever I travel. Try not to drink alcohol on the plane and sleep whenever you can. I wear a sheet mask, under-eye patches and under-eye gel – you have to let go of vanity when you fly.
I vary my workouts…
I love food…
…and feel such a level of satisfaction from eating good food. I cook a lot, using fresh vegetables and fruit and organic meat. I don’t mind eating cheese and dessert, but I’m a big advocate of portion control – enjoy your food, but in moderation.
The best advice I ever had…
…was from my dad. He always said, “simplicity is elegance” – and that has become my beauty philosophy.
IN THE EVENING
I ‘mask’ a lot
I like sheet masks in summer, as they are cooler, and a cream mask in winter. Dr. Barbara Sturm does a great mask – and I do like her Darker Skin Tones products for women of color.
My night-time skincare regimen?
I remove my makeup with one of my Lauren Napier Beauty Cleansing Wipes – just wiping away the day along with your makeup feels so good. Then I use the Dr. Barbara Sturm Enzyme Cleanser – it’s a powder that I mix with a cleansing gel. In the evening, I like to add a bit of eucalyptus essential oil to a warm towel and just breathe in the aroma to help me wind down while doing my skincare. I use Shani Darden’s Retinol Reform serum and Leland Francis’s Twenty-Nine Botanical Serum – it’s one of the very best face oils I’ve used. If my skin is looking really tired, I might go in with the Natura Bissé Diamond Extreme Mask – I either sleep in it or cook dinner while wearing it.
To step up my makeup…
…I love a black liquid liner, or maybe a blue one, and I’ll do a winged eye or a nice smoky eye with my Tom Ford Beauty Eye Color Quad.
I love going to a spa
The Mario Badescu spa on New York’s East Side has great treatments. And I love seeing Joanna Vargas on 5th Avenue, or I’ll go to the Natura Bissé spa on Park Avenue – it all depends on my skin concerns. My favorite dermatologist is Caroline Robinson and I fly out to see her in Chicago. She is fantastic – and focuses on black and brown skin tones and conditions.
I keep my body healthy…
…by seeing physical therapist Jason Kang. I have problems after so many years working as a makeup artist and standing for 17 hours on a movie set, but after seeing him, my body has never been in better shape. He is so patient – and when you work with him, you feel you can take on the world.
To help me sleep…
…I’ve been drinking tart cherry juice – it’s a natural sleep aid – and my sister gave me a CBD brand that you drop into your night-time tea; it puts you into a state of relaxation. I try to unplug an hour before I go to bed – I dim the lights, light a candle and listen to Miles Davis and then I really unwind. Aromatherapy is so important for me, and I love a scented Diptyque candle – I burn candles all day and spend a fortune on them.
On my bedside table I have…
…a glass of water, a stack of books, fresh flowers and Diptyque candles.
