5 top makeup artists share their best tips for glowing skin

With ‘glowing’ still the most-wanted skin finish and ‘glow’ a highly searched term on Google, NEWBY HANDS asks leading makeup artists to share their secrets on how they give their clients – who include Priyanka Chopra, Jennifer Aniston and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex – their amazing glow. Forget about shimmery highlights – it’s what goes underneath that really counts…

Gucci Westman

Gucci Westman is renowned for making A-listers such as Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow look their naturally glowing best. And the secret is what she uses under the foundation – not over it.

“I love that glowy, glassy skin look – and to get that, I start by using my Westman Atelier Lit Up Highlight Stick on the skin between the cheekbones and the eyes – blending it right up to under the eyes and down along the cheekbones. This adds a real radiance when you use it under your foundation, and it ends up looking quite ethereal. The skin looks juicy and glass-like – and I want to look more juicy than tired! Also, I find it creates a sophisticated, glassy highlight, as it’s more opaque than a classic highlighter, which can take over and be more dominant.”

Daniel Martin

Daniel Martin excels at IRL skin glow, as seen on Jessica Alba, Priyanka Chopra and, most famously, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, on her wedding day. Here is his tip for getting that natural dewy finish.

“After you have done your skincare rituals, you want to keep that lit-from-within look coming through your makeup, so try spot-treating by covering just the areas that need it around the face with a long-wear concealer in the same shade as your foundation. This technique enables you to neutralize and balance where you need to, so you can then use less foundation and not cover up that natural radiance with makeup. If you want some added glow on top of your makeup, use a cream or liquid highlighter (not powder), dabbed on the tops of the cheeks, bridge of the nose and cupid’s bow.”

Mali Thomas

Mali Thomas founded the #DewyBrownGirls movement to share her expertise with women of color. Here is her step-by-step guide to glowing skin.

“To achieve dewy, healthy skin, it’s essential to start with skincare; most of my routine is dedicated to prepping the skin. Although I love highlighters, I prefer the reflective and natural glow from properly prepped skin. I use the Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base to start off for hydrating, then go in with Dr. Barbara Sturm Glow Drops on the high points of the face. Alternatively, I’ll use a face oil on the high points, under my foundation – I love Tulura Botanical Facial Oil. I then use the Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick; you can blend it on with your fingers and it always looks like [real] skin. A lot of African-American women don’t use bronzer, or don’t feel it’s made for us – but it is. And it adds real warmth and glow to the skin.”

Nam Vo

Nam Vo, who has worked with Chrissy Teigen and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, is famous for her #dewydumplings glossy skin. Here is her guide to getting that glow at home.

“I know how to paint a face and use a ton of makeup and highlight to create an illusion of glowy skin, but, rather than the illusion, it’s better to work towards having the real thing. Which means taking excellent care of your skin with cleanser, serums, massage and exfoliation. That said, I think the use of beauty tools is at the forefront of skincare right now: microneedling to reduce pigmentation and improve texture; NuFace or Ziip Beauty micro-current devices for firmness; and radio-frequency technology using the TriPollar Stop X Skin Renewal Device to tighten. As for makeup, the best base to create that lit-from-within glow is Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter. And, for a highlight, Kevyn Aucoin’s Glass Glow Liquid Illuminator gives that beautiful glassy skin finish.”

Valeria Ferreira

Valeria Ferreira is famous for blending skincare with makeup to give her clients (Victoria Beckham and Lily James are regulars) the most incredible natural glow. Here’s how she does it.

“Glowing skin starts with great skincare, so you need to choose the products that lock moisture into your skin – hyaluronic acid and lactic acid are a great place to start.

“I find that Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Hyaluronic Ampoules give an incredible glow that lasts for hours, especially when combined with a hydrating moisturizer like Augustinus Bader’s The Rich Cream or La Mer’s The Moisturizing Soft Cream – you’ll glow for the entire day. Alternatively, mix the hyaluronic acid and your moisturizer in with your foundation and concealer. This is an old trick of mine that gives you the most natural sheer glow and creates an effortless look. If you do feel too ‘glowy’, just micro-powder those areas by lightly applying a fine powder with a small Beautyblender sponge to absorb unwanted shine. Charlotte Tilbury’s The Airbrush Flawless Finish Micro-Powder is great for this.”
