Carey Mulligan

Following the trend for archival fashion on the red carpet, Carey Mulligan dazzled in a showstopping custom Balenciaga recreation of a 1951 design that exuded Old Hollywood glamour and contrasted perfectly with the actor’s ultra-modern, sleek bob. Cinched at the waist and flaring dramatically at the hem, the mermaid-style dress was styled by Andrew Mukamal with elegant over-the-elbow gloves, in keeping with the original, and was elevated further by studded diamond earrings.

Zendaya

Zendaya

Thanks to her fearless red-carpet style, Dune star Zendaya is always among the most anticipated awards-show attendees – and for last night’s ceremony, she certainly didn’t disappoint. Teaming up with superstar stylist Law Roach, she arrived in an exquisitely detailed, iridescent one-shouldered gown by Armani Privé with an embellished black bodice and palm-tree embroidery, finished with a diamond-encrusted cuff and pendant earrings.

Margot Robbie

On the heels of a headline-making press tour for Barbie, Margot Robbie also joined forces with stylist Andrew Mukamal, the man behind her most viral red-carpet moments of the past year, for this strapless, sequined black dress courtesy of Versace. Sleek and refreshingly understated – yet no less glamorous for it – the FW24 design was paired with Manolo Blahnik heels and a chunky vintage cuff, while minimal monochrome makeup and undone hair kept the overall look effortless.

Lupita Nyong’o

More than a decade after taking Hollywood by storm, PORTER cover star Lupita Nyong’o embraced a full-circle moment in a custom pastel-blue V-neck evening gown by Armani Privé that evoked her now-iconic first Oscars outfit. Styled once again by Micaela Erlanger, this time round she traded floating pleats for a fitted peplum silhouette with sequins and feathers, paired with jewelry by De Beers.

Emma Stone

Emma Stone

Poor Things star Emma Stone hailed the return of the oversized peplum as she picked up her second Academy Award for Best Actress. Created by Louis Vuitton’s Nicolas Ghesquière in collaboration with the actor’s long-time stylist Petra Flannery, the statement-making, mint-green dress and matching satin pumps perfectly complemented Stone’s features, while her architectural accessories were the handiwork of Louis Vuitton’s in-house jewelry designer, Francesca Amfitheatrof.

America Ferrera

America Ferrera

One of the more brightly dressed stars of the evening, America Ferrera teamed up with stylist Karla Welch for a bombshell-pink, figure-skimming dress that paid homage to Ferrera’s Oscar-nominated role in Barbie. Crafted from metal mesh and featuring a plunging sweetheart neckline, the Versace gown was adorned with a dreamy ruby-and-diamond necklace by Pomellato.

Sandra Hüller

For her Oscars debut, Anatomy of a Fall’s Sandra Hüller turned to Schiaparelli’s Daniel Roseberry for a black velvet dress that nodded to the surrealist fashion house’s codes. Oversized, angular shoulders dialed up an otherwise pared-back silhouette, while a glittering Cartier collar necklace picked up on the gown’s keyhole detailing.

Michelle Yeoh

Michelle Yeoh

Last year’s Best Actress winner Michelle Yeoh turned to Balenciaga for a one-shouldered gown in shimmering silver, complete with sophisticated over-the-elbow gloves. The actor kept the look simple with classic black pumps, while eye-catching diamond foliage earrings by Taiwanese jewelry designer Cindy Chao and a diminutive evening watch added a touch of sparkle.

Greta Lee

Greta Lee

Past Lives star Greta Lee reunited with go-to label Loewe for a characteristically cool-girl spin on red-carpet dressing, with help from It-stylist Danielle Goldberg. Plucked directly from the brand’s FW24 show, the two-tone gown featured a contrasting draped scarf-neck collar, and was complemented by edgy diamond-studded paperclip earrings in platinum from Tiffany & Co.

Issa Rae

Issa Rae

Barbie and American Fiction star Issa Rae arrived at the ceremony to present the award for Best Live Action Short Film in an alluring deep-green sequined creation from Ami Paris. Featuring a plunging neckline and thigh-high spilt, the Grecian-style dress was rounded out with Gianvito Rossi sandals, a sleek black clutch and an intricate updo.

Jamie Lee Curtis

Jamie Lee Curtis

Jamie Lee Curtis proved that, sometimes, less is more in a strikingly simple three-quarter-sleeved black dress with a subtle train by Dolce & Gabbana that was the picture of pared-back elegance. To accessorize, she added an antiquity-inspired gold cuff by Californian jewelry designer Cathy Waterman, paired with floral earrings and swept-back hair.

What happened at the Oscars 2024?

In a night where the winners were largely awarded as predicted, Oppenheimer was the front-runner. It took home seven statuettes, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Best Director for Christopher Nolan. Elsewhere, Emma Stone triumphed in the Best Actress category for her role in Poor Things, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph won Best Supporting Actress for The Holdovers. Randolph’s accolade was presented to her by a group of previous winners: Lupita Nyong’o, Jamie Lee Curtis, Mary Steenburgen, Rita Moreno and Regina King. In a tearful acceptance speech, she said: “I always wanted to be different. Now, I realise I just need to be myself… Thank you for seeing me.”

Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas received Best Original Song for What Was I Made For? (from Barbie). The movie was also behind a second major musical moment of the night, when Ryan Gosling gave a dazzling, high-octane performance of I’m Just Ken, accompanied by a few of his co-star Kens and Slash of Guns N’ Roses.

There were more sombre sides to the ceremony, too. Many attendees wore protest pins as they took to the red carpet, while Best Documentary went to 20 Days in Mariupol and Best International Film was given to The Zone of Interest. Cillian Murphy, when accepting his Best Actor award, told the audience, “I would really like to dedicate this to the peacemakers everywhere.”
