There’s something irresistible about suede. Not only does it hold color beautifully – adding depth to bright and neutral hues, from beige, caramel and dark-chocolate to burgundy and moss-green – but it has a gorgeously soft, tactile feel that develops its own unique patina over time. It’s little wonder, then, that brands are reworking some of their most iconic accessories in the material this season.

Take DeMellier, for instance. The brand’s ‘New York Midi’ tote comes in various colors and finishes, making it almost impossible to choose a favorite – however, this sumptuous tan suede version is a strong contender for the top spot. A highlight from our NET SUSTAIN edit of consciously crafted pieces, it has been made by hand at an atelier in southern Spain and has a neatly structured East-West shape. Embrace the season’s trend for personalization by tying a printed scarf around the top handles or attaching a collection of your favorite charms. Elsewhere, Gucci’s leather-trimmed ‘Blondie’ bag comes in a versatile olive-green shade and can either be carried by the top handle or a longer shoulder strap. Alternatively, for a low-key commitment to the trend, try a suede belt – Khaite’s studded ‘Benny’ style looks undeniably cool paired with denim.

When it comes to footwear, suede may not seem like the most practical choice, but treat it well and it will stand the test of time. A crepe brush is great for removing any dirt or dust, while a protective spray will help keep stains and water marks at bay. Toteme’s impossibly chic ‘The Minimalist’ ballet flats are crafted from soft ruby-red suede with grosgrain trims and contemporary square toes. Take cues from the street-style set by teaming them with straight-leg jeans or an A-line midi skirt.

If you’re as obsessed with the boho revival as we are, then you’ll already know that suede is crucial in nailing both the romance and rock’n’roll nostalgia of ’70s looks. Designed by Alessandro Michele, Valentino Garavani’s ‘Nellcote’ tote in brown suede is traced with oversized silver studs and eyelets that nod to the decade. Embrace all things bohemian by styling yours with a flowing ruffled maxi dress. Alternatively, Khaite’s ‘Olivia’ bag is free of embellishment and has more of a minimal feel.

Alongside loafers and ballet flats, boat shoes are trending this season, too – and look especially refined in smooth suede. Slip Gianvito Rossi’s camel shoes on with jeans and an oversized jacket for days spent gallery hopping around the city, grabbing Chloé’s buckled leather-trimmed suede ‘Camera’ bag to carry your essentials. Heading out to dinner? Elevate a blazer and leather pants with Alaïa’s studded Mary Janes.
