The Expert Cleansing Tips That Will Transform Your Skin In Seconds

Incorrect cleansing can contribute to dullness, breakouts and a sensitized skin barrier, which in turn impacts the effectiveness of the products you apply afterwards. So, we asked top celebrity aestheticians – from Joanna Czech to Emma Goodman (beloved by Hailey Bieber) and Zendaya’s go-to facialist, Joomee Song – to share their secrets for thoroughly clean skin. Joanna Czech: Do a fortnightly cleansing treatment

“I get clients to do a special treatment at home using a cleansing oil and clay mask. Once you’ve removed your makeup, do your second cleanse with the cleansing oil, followed by the clay mask layered on top. Leave this on for up to 15 minutes, then massage the two together on your skin with a little water before removing them – it’s a great deep-cleansing and micro-peeling treatment. Do this twice a week for four weeks and your skin will be perfectly smooth and decongested.

Shani Darden: What follows your cleanser matters

“If you want to transform dry skin, make sure you’re using a gentle facial cleanser that doesn’t strip the skin. My Cleansing Serum contains oat-bran extract, to prevent moisture loss and repair the skin’s barrier, which is essential if your skin is dry. Exfoliation is also key here, since it not only brightens skin, but will help your hydrating products work more efficiently, too. Follow up with a hyaluronic acid serum and a hydrating moisturizer to really lock in hydration.”

Emma Goodman (aka The Skin Witch): Skip harsh ingredients

“I see a lot of people who overuse retinol and have really stripped their skin barrier. This barrier protects you from the environment, sun and bacteria, and when it becomes weak, you’ll get very red, sensitized and dry skin. I always tell clients that if they feel like they’re very clogged, they can use a bit of baking soda mixed with their cleanser, as this will give them all the benefits of exfoliation, but in a safe way. Use this mix a few times a week if your skin feels very oily and clogged.”

Joomee Song: Always consider your skin type

“Cleansing is the most important step in your regimen, and many people start off by overdoing it. My top tip is to use the most gentle cleanser you can possibly find for your skin type, and the first step to getting this right is to understand what kind of skin you have. Use an oil cleanser first, to attract oil, then a milky cleanser, or a light, balmy formula as your second step if you have oilier skin. Just because you have oily skin doesn’t mean you need to use a foaming cleanser to dry out the oil – your skin will only release more oil because it’s defending itself. If your skin is on the dry side, you need to add more hydration with your cleanser, because that’s what your skin is lacking.”

Angela Caglia: Rethink your AM and PM cleansing routines

“My biggest beauty secret is not to cleanse in the morning. I tell my clients this and they come back four weeks later with perfectly balanced, changed skin. As we sleep, our organs are regenerating, and our skin is our largest organ – you’re not in the elements, nor wearing makeup or sunscreen, so when you wake up, your skin is in perfect balance from your nightly ritual. At night, especially if you’re over 30, using a lightweight cleansing oil is a must, since oils are made with antioxidants and essential fatty acids, which our skin needs to be healthy. I love marula oil and meadowfoam because they’re great for acne-prone skin as well. I’ve incorporated both in my Neroli Cleansing Oil. Cleansing oils work best with your skin’s natural oils to deep-cleanse pollution, dirt and sunscreen without drying your lipid barrier.”
