The 10 Must-Haves On Team NET-A-PORTER’s FW24 Wish List
From preppy back-to-school silhouettes to daring sheer designs and sculptural jewelry to complete every look, FW24’s runways were awash with plenty to get excited about. Here, our fashion experts reveal the leading looks on their radar right now…
Burgundy everything Abbi Minchin, junior market editor
“Following seasons of red-hot designs, burgundy was a refreshing development most definitely led by Sabato De Sarno’s ‘Rosso Ancora’ debut Gucci collection last year. It felt very appropriate as we look ahead to fall. The best thing about a color trend is how easily it can be incorporated into your wardrobe. Whether an accent accessory or head-to-toe monochrome, there are a multitude of ways to style it. Personally, sleek silhouettes are on my wish list this season – from stretch bodysuits to long-line dresses – styled with an oversized blazer or leather jacket, a la Loewe’s bomber style, and boots for the ultimate effortless fall look.”
Back-to-school shoes Millie Parry, shopping assistant
“Perfectly polished footwear is the trans-seasonal update worth investing in this season. The standout brogues and loafers came from Church’s and Loewe, with feminine Mary Janes from Bally. I’ll be styling my loafers with tailored separates and an oversized tailored coat. Another go-to right now is my Mary Jane ballet flats with a poplin skirt and oversized cashmere or head-to-toe denim.”
Leather outerwear Viktorija Tomasevic, shopping editor
“If I could only buy one thing this season, it would be luxe leather outwear. It’s a true style classic and wardrobe essential when it comes to fall dressing. It might be a big investment, but I like to look at it as a last-a-lifetime piece that will carry me through the seasons and years to come. Toteme’s croc-effect coat in chocolate brown is high on my wish list – I will be wearing it over cashmere knits and straight-leg jeans for an everyday look when the temperature drops.”
The ‘everything’ tote Sabina Khan, junior fashion editor
“As much as I love fashion, I’m a practical girl at heart, so when it comes to bags, an ‘everything’ tote is my go-to. Now that we are transitioning into fall, I’ll be swapping my brown Dragon Diffusion basket tote for a sturdy leather one, and I’ve got my eye on a few! I usually opt for black bags but I’m finding myself very drawn to fall colors recently, so The Row’s ‘XL Idaho’ tote or Bottega Veneta’s ‘Cabat’ would be a nice change, and both would pair beautifully with my utilitarian winter coats and trenches. I love that they are big enough to fit my whole life into, yet they’re ever so chic.”
Country dressing Colleen Ross, acting fashion content editor
“My favorite trend to emerge from the FW24 shows is steeped in nostalgia for the English countryside. From herringbone, argyle and plaid motifs to utilitarian coats, preppy blazers and kilts in varying lengths, the runways were awash with heritage fabrics and silhouettes that channelled lady-of-the-manor energy (picture Queen Elizabeth II off-duty at Balmoral or one of the characters in Nancy Mitford’s The Pursuit of Love and you’re on the right track). Brands including Chloé, Loewe and Altuzarra championed an elegant mood, while the likes of Rabanne and Burberry opted for a more rebellious punk spirit. I’ll be embracing the theme by layering a mid-century-inspired midi dress beneath an oversized field jacket with chunky lace-up boots.”
Investment denim Kay Barron, fashion director
“I spend about 85% of my time in denim for work, rest and play. This means I have casual denim for off-duty, which is usually a looser fit and works well with sneakers or sandals, and then there is the work and play denim, which is more elevated and, well, fancy. FW24 is the season of investment denim. Denim worthy of the most special occasions, that can be dressed up or worn to give a little uplift to off-duty. Think soft and wide by Chloé to give an edge to boho blousing; deep-black and sensual for after dark by Proenza Schouler; or simply to ramp up your favorite relaxed knits at Stella McCartney. Simply add big block heels. This might not be your everyday denim, but the way you feel every time you slip it on will make it worth the investment.”
Sculptural jewelry Kristen Neillie, fashion editor
“Big earrings are forever my go-to – I can always count on them to elevate my look. I love how chunky, oversized jewelry can dress up an everyday outfit and make it instantly more interesting. This season, we saw some amazing sculptural metal pieces – from Bottega Veneta’s cult ‘Drop’ earrings and Chloé’s ‘Chloe’ belts to Jil Sander’s chain neck pieces and Alaïa’s show-stopper cuffs – giving me plenty of inspiration for the season ahead.”
Preppy sweaters Connie Daw, junior shopping editor
“Preppy knits have quickly become a favorite in the NET-A-PORTER office. It’s all about the details – button-up collars, cable knits and sporty stripes. Personally, I am obsessed with the polo sweater, which is as comfortable as it is stylish. Taking notes from Ferragamo and Gucci, I’ll style my knits with a feminine skirt or knee-high boots to balance the sporty aesthetic. This hard-working staple is perfect for layering beneath oversized tailoring and a cozy winter coat. For anyone who wants to lean in to the preppy trend, add a colorful pair of retro sneakers.”
Sheer dresses Gillian Brett, head of fashion content
“Of the 48 looks in Saint Laurent’s FW24 collection, creative director Anthony Vaccarello crafted almost all using fabric that is typically used to make tights. With his second-skin, sheer, unashamedly sexy dresses, skirts and blouses, Vaccarello said he wanted to “propose something that hadn’t been done before, that would get me excited”. Well, consider me thrilled. Nights out aren’t the weekly occurrence they once were for me, so when the opportunity to go ‘out out’ arises, I’m going all out with my outfit. Saint Laurent’s gauzy green dress with patent pumps is my dream evening look, which I’ll re-wear throughout the festive season and beyond, too.”
Bold belts Lydia Zacharis, buying manager
“This season, we are seeing the impact of belts reach new heights, with brands diversifying from minimal, everyday options to bolder, statement ones. It is very much about the personality belt, featuring interesting hardware, jewelry elements, chunkier metal detailing and studs. Toteme, The Row and Anderson’s remain perennial favorites for sophisticated, subtle options; while styles with a strong fashion twist include newcomer Déhanche’s signature ring-accented ‘Hollyhock’ and just-launched ‘Jolinard’ designs, Chloé’s bohemian logo and serpent metal options, Saint Laurent’s ’90s skinny leather and chain styles, along with Khaite’s new iterations of the ‘Benny’ and ‘Runway Elio’ belts.”
